The 2025 high school soccer season came to a rather understated conclusion for the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs last week, with neither team qualifying for the state playoffs. Competing in the strongest soccer league in the state doesn’t help either, with perennial powers Russellville, Siloam Springs, and Van Buren usually soaking up three of the top four postseason slots in the 5A West, not to mention Harrison along with conference newcomers Shiloh Christian and Farmington. That’s a tough lineup, but one the GHS girls and boys had hoped to overcome this spring.
The 5A West conference is usually a race for fourth place and the last playoff berth, with the top two or three slots reserved for the Cyclones, Panthers, or Pointers, depending on the year and the gender involved. This season the top four boys’ teams were Russellville (14-0), Siloam Springs (10-3-1), Van Buren (9-5), and Farmington (5-9). No surprises there. On the girls’ side of things, it was Russellville (16-0), Siloam Springs (13-2-1), Harrison (11-4-1), and Shiloh Christian (10-6). The ladies have nine teams in their conference while the boys have the traditional eight.
The Lady Bulldogs finished their season with a 6-8-2 record in sixth place while the Bulldogs went 4-8-2 and finished seventh. Yet both teams were still in the running for a playoff berth with just a couple weeks left to play. But that’s when the schedule turned nasty and the scoring dried up. After a 5-0 win over non-conference foe Cossatot River to close out April, the Lady Bulldogs failed to score in any of their last three conference matches.
Against the visiting Lady Eagles of tiny Cossatot River High School from Cove, Arkansas, the Greenwood ladies were led in scoring by team offensive leader Ally Thomas with two goals. Halle Fox, Kaya Simpson, and Hannah Simpson accounted for the other three goals.
On Friday, May 2nd, the GHS girls traveled to Siloam Springs and lost 7-0 to the Lady Panthers. Four days later, on the following Tuesday, they hosted the Lady Cyclones of Russellville and lost in similar fashion, 4-0. Then last Friday they battled the visiting Lady Bombers of Mountain Home to a scoreless tie, which accounted for their final point in the league standings as their season ended.
Over the weekend, Head Coach Andrew Post offered this brief summation of their season and a hopeful peek into the future. “And then it was over,” he said. “This season seemed to fly by, [but] I am proud of these ladies for their grit and determination, led by a great group of seniors! They battled hard against a good Mountain Home team to a 0-0 draw. We have a lot of young talent, and the future looks bright for the Lady Bulldogs.”
The Lady Bulldogs’ preseason roster listed ten seniors, including Annalise Johnson, Pate Jones, Brooklyn Kelley, Reese Moquett, Payton Scantling, Kaya Simpson, Ally Thomas, Victoria Vanderwatt, Ava Whitaker, and team manager Parker Rockford. These ladies are to be congratulated for their hard work and dedication to the girls’ soccer program.
As for Head Coach Tyler Woods and his Bulldogs, they too suffered a power outage against Siloam Springs and Russellville, failing to score in either match, before ending their season with a 2-0 win over Mountain Home. The first week of May they lost on the road at Siloam Springs, 5-0, and dropped their home contest to Russellville, 2-0. But after their season ended on a positive note, Coach Woods posted this message on the team’s Facebook page.
“We sent these seniors off the right way tonight with a 2-0 win over Mountain Home on senior night [with] goals by [seniors] David Coggin and Hudson Meeker. We are going to miss these seniors. They have done a lot for this program, and I can’t wait to see them be successful at whatever they do!” Besides Coggin and Meeker, other Bulldogs’ seniors included Eliezer Trevina, Corbin Lamb, and Braycen Austin.
