Coach Pearcy reviews Greenwood’s 2025 tennis season

Last week, Greenwood High School head tennis coach Dexter Pearcy provided the Dog Pound with a brief postmortem of the recently concluded 2025 tennis season. He has now turned his attention to varsity boys basketball where he serves as assistant coach. His daughter, Kylah, also turned in her tennis racket for a basketball, where she is the returning leader and top scorer for the Lady Bulldogs. It seems that August through February is a very busy time in the Pearcy household.

Kylah was one of only two senior netters for the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, the other being Wesley Jarrell. “They are both great competitors and also have excellent character,” said the proud dad and coach of his two senior leaders. But a lack of seniors this past season means there are a lot of experienced players returning for 2026. He added, “We will return a lot of solid players next year that will have varsity experience.”

The head coach then summarized the entire season for his two squads. “Our varsity boys singles players, Caleb Schaefer and Wesley Jarrell, combined for 11 wins. Our girls singles players, Alivia Kittell and Molly Conley, won eight matches. Our varsity boys doubles teams – Hayes Whitson and Sawyer Harry, along with Thomas Veatch and Danh Nguyen – combined for 10 wins. Our varsity girls doubles teams – Kylah and Taelyn Martin (#2 in the regular season), along with Bristol Mott and Gracie Gibbs – combined for 21 wins.”

Coach Pearcy also talked about his junior varsity players, some of whom will be counted on next season to fill vacancies on the varsity squad. “Our JV boys – Denver Church, Abel Duvall, Reed Jones, Kaleb King, Luke Mora, Weston King, Jon David Hefflin, Lucas Roper, and Drew Williams – won 10 matches. Our JV girls – Macy Conley, Natalie Copher, Presley Travis, Ana Rizzo, Rylea Jones, Shealynn Mills, Madison Nguyen, and Charlie Vaughn – won 13 matches. We have quite a few more JV players than most teams, and because of that, a lot of our JV matches are against varsity opponents.”

Regarding the 2025 conference tournament, Pearcy said, “We had three first-round victories on the girls side. Molly Conley (#13 seed) had a great first-round win, defeating the #4 seed from Van Buren. Gracie Gibbs and Bristol Mott won their first-round match against Farmington, and Kylah Pearcy and Taelyn Martin won their’s against Alma.

“In the second round, our ninth graders were very competitive. Molly fell just three games short of qualifying for state to the #5 seed from Farmington. Gracie and Bristol battled yet lost to the eventual back-to-back conference champions from Van Buren, while Kylah and Taelyn defeated Farmington to reach both the state tournament and the conference semifinals. On day two, Kylah and Taelyn fought hard against Siloam Springs, winning to advance to the finals, where they finished second overall to Van Buren,” the coach explained.

Next, the GHS tennis coach talked about the Lady Bulldogs’ doubles team that reached the state tournament, his daughter Kylah and her partner Taelyn Martin. “At state, Kylah and Taelyn defeated Marion in the first round 7-5, 6-1, before falling to the eventual state runner-up team from Lakeside in the quarterfinals. Against Marion, our girls athleticism and aggressiveness was key. We shifted our strategy some and the girls executed it perfectly in the second set. Against Lakeside, our girls won [as many] games than anyone else did against them in the tournament, falling 2-6, 3-6. We competed really well. Even though the outcome may not have been what they hoped for, earning a top eight finish in the state is a tremendous accomplishment. They both represented our school and program well.”

Finally, Coach Pearcy praised the support given him by his volunteer assistant coach. “Naomi Conley (Macy and Molly Conley's mom) stepped in as assistant coach this year. She did a fantastic job investing in the development of our players on and off the court. She has been a huge asset to our team.” The following summary highlights the results of all of Greenwood’s matches since Labor Day through the postseason.
