GHS wrestlers continue racking up wins

With the conference and state tournaments just around the corner, the GHS varsity wrestling team is rounding into shape at just the right time. The team is led by Head Coach John Kincade, assistant Shannon Rhea, and several volunteer coaches.

The Bulldogs continue to claim match and tournament wins as they prepare for the 5A Dual State tournament this coming Saturday in Russellville, the 5A West conference tournament at Lakeside High School on February 15th, and the overall 5A state tournament at the University of Arkansas - Little Rock starting February 19th.

On January 21st the Bulldogs traveled to Russellville to take on conference foes Benton and Sheridan, winning both matches handily. Greenwood topped Benton 70-3 and felled Sheridan 72-12.

Against the Benton Panthers, Greenwood’s Gustavo Martinez, Marko Dominguez, Colton Tuck, Tatum Sadler, Garrett Newman, Tyler Crossno, and Antonio Martinez were all winners on the mat.

Greenwood’s Hayden Allen, Ty Moose, Jason Arnold, Charlie Nena, and Jayden Martin all won by forfeit.

The Sheridan Yellowjackets were a bit more competitive, but also forfeited three matches to Antonio Martinez, Hayden Allen, and Beau Asher.

The Bulldogs also won nine matches on the mat. Winners included Gustavo Martinez, Garrett Haralson, Ty Moose, Colton Tuck, Tatum Sadler, Jason Arnold, Garrett Newman, Charlie Nena, and Tyler Crossno.

Greenwood traveled to Greenbrier on Saturday, January 25th to take on Cabot, Russellville, Little Rock Catholic, and Searcy, the defending 5A state champs. The Bulldogs finished second behind Cabot.

Individual performances for Greenwood included (100 lbs.) Lola Culverson (4th) in girls’ competition, (113) Hayden Allen (3rd), (126) Garett Haralson (1st), (132) Ty Moose as 1st Outstanding Wrestler, (145) Colton Tuck (2nd), (152) Tatum Sadler (4th), (160) Jason Arnold (2nd), (170) Garrett Newman (4th), and (220) Tyler Crossno (1st).

Others who wrestled for Greenwood included Yvette Torlentino, Marko Dominguez, Charlie Nena, Jayden Martin, and Kevin Douglas.

On Tuesday the 28th the Bulldogs hosted Russellville and beat the Cyclones in a competitive match, 44-30. Greenwood won seven matches on the mat and two others by forfeit.

GHS winners included Gustavo Martinez, Garrett Haralson, Ty Moose, Colton Tuck, Tatum Sadler, Jason Arnold, and Tyler Crossno.

At the end of last week the Bulldogs competed over two days in Vian, Oklahoma, winning both events, 66-15 and 72-15, respectively.

Last Thursday Greenwood earned seven forfeits and four match wins by Garrett Haralson, Marko Dominguez, Colton Tuck, and Beau Asher.

On Friday the ‘Dogs earned eight forfeits while earning points on the mat in four matches. GHS winners included Haralson, Dominguez, Tuck, and Asher.

The Bulldogs hosted a meet this past Tuesday on senior night, honoring the team’s five seniors including Kevin Douglas, Colton Tuck, Garrett Newman, Jayden Martin, Sam Johnson, and Megan Morse.

Youth wrestlers win small teams title

The Greenwood Warthawgs recently took part in the 12th annual youth state tournament and won the small team title. The team is coached by GHS head wrestling coach John Kincade and volunteer assistant coaches Caleb and Ashley Erskine.

The team’s 20 young wrestlers placed 5th overall behind Spingdale (63 kids), Cabot (37 kids), and two clubs from Bentonville (45/30 kids). Greenwood had four first place champions and 15 kids in the top four of their age and weight divisions.

Individual results in Division I include Greenwood’s Reed Gray (1st) and Jackson Little (2nd).

Division II participants included Greenwood’s Jaxon Marshall (1st) and Dillon Bailey (1st). Marshall was also named as the outstanding wrestler for his group. Michael Ellis placed 2nd and Tyson Lindsey 3rd.

In Division III, Greenwood’s Jaxen Cepeda placed 1st and Dylan Friend 2nd. Ty Kennedy, Tyler Branton, and Jake Pugh all placed 3rd.

Camden Crew finished 3rd in Division IV, while Jackson Witherington placed 2nd in Division V, followed by Jarod Pace (3rd), and Parker Branton (4th).
