The Greenwood High School wrestling team, under the direction of Head Coach John Kincade, continues to shine in its fourth year of existence. The Bulldogs competed last weekend in Oklahoma at the Tulsa Edison Dual Team Tournament as the schedule approaches the mid-way point.
Before Christmas, the 'Dogs hosted Checotah, Oklahoma on December 17th in their only home meet so far this season, winning 42-33. At Poteau, Oklahoma on December 18-19 the Bulldogs finished second (152-148) behind the host Pirates. Participating teams included Poteau, Checotah, and Quinton from Oklahoma, and Fort Smith Northside and Southside, Van Buren, and Greenwood from Arkansas.

Last Friday, January 8th, Greenwood wrestled in pool play at Tulsa Edison High School. The Bulldogs were the only non-Oklahoma team to take part in the event. On Friday they defeated Checotah (49-28), slipped past Mannford (34-32), dominated Tulsa Union's junior varsity squad (60-21), and got a forfeit from Tulsa Nathan Hale.
On Saturday the top eight teams from Friday's results wrestled in the championship bracket. The bottom eight teams competed in the consolation bracket. The Bulldogs qualified for the upper half of the bracket and defeated Tulsa Webster on Saturday, 64-12. In the semi-finals Greenwood beat Mannford in a rematch, 47-34. And in the championship finals, the Bulldogs topped Tulsa Edison, 45-36, successfully defending their title from last year.
In a semi-finals rematch against Mannford, Greenwood's Dustin Williams (120 lbs.) avenged an earlier loss, winning 18-2, Donald Faulkenberry (195 lbs.) overcame an earlier loss and pinned his opponent the second time round, and Austin Collins (220 lbs.) atoned for an earlier 5-4 loss with a pin at the 5:58 mark of his match to put Greenwood into the finals.
Against Tulsa Edison in the finals, the Bulldogs overcame five falls to prevail 45-36 in a match decided by GHS sophomore heavyweight Jon Womack. Losing 1-0 in the 2nd period, Womack was able to pin his opponent in 3:48.
"We looked a little sluggish on Friday night," said Coach Kincade. "But on Saturday we came to wrestle. I was very pleased with our intensity, determination, and [conditioning]. The Bulldogs were on a mission. I was very pleased with their performance," said the coach.
GHS wrestlers competed in a meet at Springdale Har-Ber this past Tuesday and will travel to Checotah on Thursday. The Bulldogs will host Rogers Heritage next Tuesday. The following list provides team and individual scores and performances at the Tulsa Edison Dual Tournament.
