As recently as it began in early August, the 2025 regular season is now over for both Greenwood High School golf teams and Head Coach Tyler Woods. The young coach and new dad got back in the saddle (or the cart) this past summer after sitting out the past couple years while Ryan Casalman led the GHS linksters before taking over the GHS varsity ladies basketball program. Woods and wife Jordan recently welcomed a baby boy to their family. The couple also have two young daughters. It’s been a good summer for the Tyler Woods family.
Two months ago, the head coach predicted how his teams would perform this season. He had an experienced and senior-led boys squad that was set to compete in a talent-rich 5A West conference and would need an exceptional performance to reach the state tournament. On the brighter side, the Lady Bulldogs were very young but also very talented, led by a pair of promising freshmen, with a good chance to compete for the conference title and reach the state tournament. Both predictions have come true.
On Tuesday, September 23rd, both GHS teams competed in the 5A West conference tournament to determine which schools move on to their respective state events. As the GHS coach foresaw, his Bulldogs came close but missed out on making the state tournament while the Lady Bulldogs finished second in the 5A West and played earlier this week in state competition. Ultimately, the Lady Bulldogs finished sixth in the state, while junior Carson Wade will play next week in the boys’ state tournament. This article includes results from the 2025 season for both GHS teams.

When the dust settled after round one, the Bulldogs held a 3-2 lead after nine holes.

September 8th – The Bulldogs win the Ryder Cup!
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs claimed their second consecutive Ryder Cup championship earlier this month when both GHS teams finished their three-part competition against Fort Smith Southside, the final format being singles match play at Ben Geren over 18 holes. The Bulldogs held a 6-4 lead going into the day and finished with 11½ points to Southside’s 8½ to seal the victory. This is the sixth year of the Ryder Cup between the two schools, with this win giving the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead in the series.
For the Southside boys, they earned wins over Greenwood’s Cooper Hogeland, Carter Koch, Jake Gigerich, and Dacen Drennan. But Greenwood’s #1 player, Carson Wade, won his match while Dean Hogeland earned a tie with his Southside opponent. For the Greenwood girls, Cambree Shrum, Ellery Hogeland, Payton Crowe, and Addison Phonepradith all won their matches. “The Ryder Cup competition was a lot of fun and the kids made memories that will last a lifetime,” said Coach Woods after the win.
September 16 – “It was a great day at Chamberlyne Country Club for the Bulldogs,” Coach Woods posted on Facebook just over two weeks ago. After nine holes of play, the Greenwood boys beat Dardanelle’s boys, 155-172. Junior Carson Wade shot an even round (36) to be the boys’ medalist. Dean Hogeland (37) and Ames Middleton (39) also had great performances. Dardanelle had only one female player, so the GHS girls battled each other for the lowest individual score. Freshmen Ellery Hogeland shot a 5-over-par 41 for medalist honors while Payton Crowe shot a round of 45, Cambree Shrum fired a 47, and Addison Phonepradith scored a 59.
September 17th @ Russellville vs. Greenwood

Conference tournament September 23rd
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs played in their conference tournament last Monday at Eagle Crest Country Club in Alma. The GHS boys played well but just missed out on qualifying for state as a team with a combined score of 323. However, Carson Wade qualified for state as an individual, shooting a score of 76. Wade and Cooper Hogeland were both named All-Conference.
The Lady Bulldogs did qualify for state as the second-place team from the 5A West, shooting a combined 261. Ellery Hogeland and Cambree Shrum earned All-Conference honors. The GHS ladies will compete at state next Tuesday at Ridgepoint Country Club in Jonesboro, and Carson Wade will compete the following Wednesday at state at Pine Bluff Country Club. “We are very proud of all our Bulldog golfers. They played hard and pushed their limits,” posted Coach Woods.
The boys teams scores included Harrison (304), Russellville (304), Mountain Home (312), Greenwood (323), Alma (342), Van Buren (348), Siloam Springs (355), and Farmington (+75). For Greenwood, Carson Wade shot a 76, Cooper Hogeland an 81, Dean Hogeland an 84, Jacob Gigerich an 82, and Cruz Coatney (86).
The girls team scores were as follows: Russellville (245), Greenwood (261), Harrison (284), Mountain Home (294), Van Buren (333), followed by Farmington and Siloam Springs. Class 5A Girls State Tournament
Last Tuesday, September 30th, the Lady Bulldogs competed in the 5A state tournament played at Ridgepointe Country Club in Jonesboro. Also a member of the 5A West, the Lady Cyclones of Russellville won their third consecutive state championship while the GHS girls placed sixth overall with a score of 272. Ellery Hogeland led the way for Greenwood with an 18-hole total of 81. Fellow freshman Payton Crowe carded an 84 while senior Cambree Shrum shot a 107. Addison Phonepradith fired a 113, but her score did not count in the team total.
“We finished sixth at girls’ state,” said Coach Woods. “But what was encouraging was our two freshmen shot an 81 and 84 and qualified for All-State, in the top 15%. Sadly, our senior [Cambree Shrum] had a bad day, a 107, which is probably her worst score all year.” Shrum has been a big part of the Lady Bulldogs’ program the last few years, and she will be missed, said the coach.
But Woods also did some calculations regarding his two returning freshman, Hogeland and Crowe. “[They] would have scored very well at state had it not been for the seniors who played,” he said. Subtracting those seniors and just looking at the scores of underclassmen, Woods added, “Ellery Hogeland would have been tied for first place and Payton Crowe would have tied for fourth place. If we can find one or two solid girls who can shoot in the 90s, we have a chance to win next year if our freshmen keep improving. I really think they’re going to be scoring in the 70s next year. There are three or four girls on the radar right now that I‘m trying to recruit.”
The coach also revealed the itinerary for Carson Wade’s participation in the boys’ state tournament at Pine Bluff Country Club, including a practice round on Tuesday before the actual event next Wednesday. Wade earned the right to play at state based on his individual performance at the 5A West conference match on September 23rd.
