GHS golfers off to a good start

The Greenwood High School girls and boys golf teams are off to a solid start in 2019 under the tutelage of two new head coaches, Ronnie Sockey for the girls and Tyler Wood for the boys.

Battling the heat and rain, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs played three matches over the past two weeks, including a tournament at Springdale Country Club.

Last Thursday the GHS linksters competed against Fort Smith Southside and Northside at Ben Geren park in Fort Smith. Three Lady Bulldogs combined for a team score of 120, while a quartet of Bulldogs came in as 162.

Senior Ella Austin was on fire, carding a team-best 35 over nine holes to lead the GHS girls in scoring. Sophomore Grace Woody was next at 42, followed by another tenth-grader, Hallie Jones, at 43. Junior Olivia Walker shot an even 50, but did not figure in the team scoring.

On the boys side of things, junior Brady Fein led the way for Greenwood with a nine-hole round of 38. He was followed by Hayden Weaver at 39, Ethan Clark at 42, and Landon Tuck at 43.

The junior varsity boys also participated. Jake Spoon and Chris both shot a round of 44, followed by Avery Cole at 45, Cade Shrum at 50, and Deacon Drennan at 55.

Last Monday, August 19th, the Greenwood boys competed in tournament play at Springdale. The event covered 18 holes, with Hayden Weaver leading the pack with a team-best 77.

Brady Fein was next with an 86, followed by Cade Shrum at 89 and Landon Tuck at 95 for a team score of 340.

On August 15th boys GHS teams were in action at home at Vache Grasse Country Club against Springdale Har-Ber for a nine-hole match.

When the clubs were finally put away the Greenwood boys edged Springdale by one shot, 157 to 158. Greenwood players Hayden Weaver and Cade Shrum both shot a 38 to pace the Bulldogs, followed by Ethan Clark (40), Landon Tuck (41), and Brady Fein (42).

Springdale defeated the Lady Bulldogs by six shots, 115 to 121. Greenwood's Grace Woody was the match medalist with even par round of 36. Hallie Jones fired a 40, Ella Austin a 45, and Olivia Walker a 47.

The junior varsity girls played well for their first time out as freshman. Maleigha Carney shot a 59 and Jessica Williams carded a 63.

The JV boys had some good scores also, led by Chris Daggs (40), Jake Spoon (47), Avery Cole (49), Deacon Drennan (56), and Jake Robbins (57).

Greenwood was scheduled to play this past Tuesday at Russellville Country Club, but results were not available at press time. They were also to play on Wednesday at Siloam Springs.
