Lady Bulldogs cruising against early league foes

After playing a tough non-conference schedule and going 8-4, including five tournament matches in the Early Bird Invitational at Bentonville, the Greenwood Lady Bulldogs’ volleyball team has reeled off four impressive conference victories, winning all four matches without losing a single game.

Perfect 3-0 sweeps of Greenbrier, Little Rock Christian, Siloam Springs, and Russellville has improved Greenwood’s overall record to 12-4. Two of those wins came at home and two on the road.

The GHS girls were also in action this past Tuesday evening at Alma, but results of the conference match were not available at press time. Greenwood will host Beebe on Thursday this week.

Greenbrier

Following the Labor Day holiday, against the Lady Panthers on September 4th, Greenwood won convincingly on the road, 25-19, 25-22, and 25-12. Senior Abby Cagle and junior Camryn Presley led the offense with a dozen kill shots each. Junior Brooke Jones added nine and junior Zoie Benton had seven.

Junior Izzy Davis had 15 digs in the match, sophomore Anna Johnson (20) and Presley (13) led the team in assists, and Davis led the way in service receptions with 21.

Both teams are now playing in the reconfigured 5A West since the Arkansas Activities Association eliminated Class 7A in all sports but football.

On September 11th the Lady Bulldogs won in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, and 25-15. Only one Lady Bulldogs’ player reached double digits in kills, Zoie Benton will 11, but several others contributed. Camryn Presley had eight kills, Abby Cagle five, Larkin Luke four, and Brooke Jones with three.

Anna Johnson had three service aces, while Davis (18), Presley (15), and Johnson (11) led the team in digs. Johnson also had 12 assists to lead the team, while Presley had 10. Davis (17) and Chapple (10) led in service receptions.

Russellville

Last Thursday the Lady Bulldogs hosted the Lady Cyclones and won all three games handily by identical scores of 25-15. Presley (13) and Cagle (12) led the team offensively in kill shots. Benton added seven and Luke five. Benton also had four service aces.

Cagle and Presley led the team with four blocks each, and Davis led in digs with 18. Johnson had 21 assists while Presley had 10. Davis and Benton both had 17 service receptions with two errors each.

Upcoming

Five weeks remain in the regular season, along with 10 conference matches and one non-conference tournament in Ozark, Missouri, before the state playoffs begin in late October. As defending state champs, the Lady Bulldogs are certainly one of the favorites to make another run at a state title, along with last year’s 6A runners-up from Jonesboro.
