Spring is approaching and with it comes a plethora of high school sports, including soccer. Both GHS teams have kicked off their respective seasons, opening with a benefit doubleheader against Prairie Grove on February 28th.
The Lady Bulldogs played well defensively in their first outing, but came up short in a 1-0 loss, allowing a single second half goal.
The GHS boys scored a 6-0 rout with goals from five different players, including Ralph Meeker, who scored twice. Others with single goals were Alessandro Maggio, Landon Henning, Riley Wann, and Matteo Cacciamani.
Both teams then hosted Maumelle on the turf at Smith-Robinson Stadium on March 3rd before diverging to participate in separate tournaments last weekend.
Lady Bulldogs
The GHS girls, under the supervision of head coach Andrew Post, lost another nail biter to Maumelle, 1-0. Again, great defense was undone by a single goal in the second half.
But the Lady Bulldogs regrouped last weekend while competing in the Spa City Invitational, winning two of three contests in Hot Springs.
The Greenwood girls lost their opener against Hot Springs Lakeside, 3-0. Greenwood trailed 1-0 at halftime but gave up two additional goals in the second half.
But single goals in each half against Sylvan Hills was enough to pull out the season’s first win, 2-0, over the Lady Bears. Seniors Amber Frye and Bella Mora were responsible for the two scores.
In the tournament finale the Lady Bulldogs notched a 2-1 victory over the Lady Pointers of Van Buren.
Bulldogs
The GHS boys, under head coach Tyler Woods, opened their regular season with a narrow 3-2 victory over Maumelle.
Trailing 1-0 at the intermission, the ‘Dogs got second half goals from Aaron Waldron, Alessandro Maggio, and Matteo Cacciamani.
Against Clarksville this past Friday in the Greenwood Invitational, the ‘Dogs held the Panthers scoreless in a 2-0 victory. Italian foreign exchange student Alessandro Moggio scored both goals for Greenwood in the first half.
But the offense dried up for the Bulldogs in the next two matches.
After regulation play ended in a 1-1 tie, Newcastle, Oklahoma beat Greenwood 3-2 in the overtime shootout.
In their third and final match the Bulldogs fell 3-0 to Holland Hall of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Schedule
The 5A West conference race began this week with a girls and boys doubleheader at Little Rock Christian this past Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
The GHS boys then take part in a tournament at Vilonia this coming weekend, while the GHS ladies compete for the River Valley Cup in tournament play at Van Buren.
