GHS soccer teams hoping to finish strong

The Greenwood High School soccer teams have just over a week left in the regular season, and both the girls’ and boys’ squads hope to end on a high note and qualify for post-season play. Both teams traveled to Siloam Springs this past Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.

The Bulldogs are 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the 5A West, good enough for a fourth place tie with Greenbrier. The Lady Bulldogs are 8-7-1 overall and 4-6 in league play, currently fifth in the 5A West standings.

GHS Girls

The Lady Bulldogs have the most difficult path to the post-season, presently two games behind fourth place Greenbrier with three matches remaining, including the regular season finale on the road against the Lady Panthers.

Obviously, the GHS girls must win out to have any chance, including this past Tuesday at Siloam Springs. A loss likely dropped them three games behind Greenbrier with three matches left to play, almost an impossible task based on Greenbrier’s remaining weak schedule against Alma and Beebe.

But hope springs eternal and all the Lady Bulldogs can do is take one match at a time. They will play at Beebe on Friday then host Alma next Tuesday before ending their regular season at Greenbrier next Friday, May 3rd.

The Little Rock Christian Lady Warriors, the top team in Class 5A, showed little mercy on visiting Greenwood two weeks ago (April 12th) whipping the Lady Bulldogs 6-0. The home team led 4-0 at the break.

Head Coach Andrew Post and his girls then hosted Russellville on the 16th and played a great match despite coming out on the short end of a 3-2 score.

The visitors led 2-0 at the intermission before the Lady Bulldogs mounted a second half comeback. Senior Sarah White and junior Paula Burillo each scored a goal for Greenwood.

Last Friday the GHS girls traveled to Vilonia and battled to a 2-2 tie at the end of regular, but Greenwood won the match in a shootout, 5-4.

Vilonia led 2-0 at the break, but Greenwood tied the score with a pair of second half goals.

GHS Boys

The Bulldogs also ran into a buzz saw at Little Rock Christian on April 12th, losing 6-0. The Warriors scored three goals in each half.

Little Rock Christian is currently second in the 5A West with an 8-2 league mark, 10-3 overall. The Russellville boys lead the conference with a 9-1 record.

The Cyclones notched one of their nine league wins against the Bulldogs on April 16th at Greenwood’s Smith-Robinson Stadium.

The visitors dented the net just once in the first half and made it stand up for the 1-0 victory, extending the Bulldogs’ scoreless streak to four halves.

Head Coach Tyler Woods and his footballers finally got back into the win column last Friday at Vilonia, winning in a blowout, 6-1. The visitors scored three goals in each half.

The GHS boys will travel to Beebe on Friday, will host Alma next Tuesday, then conclude their regular season with a critical showdown at Greenbrier next Friday, May 3rd, a match that could determine which of the two teams qualifies for the playoffs.

Greenwood won the earlier match with the Panthers, and a second victory over Greenbrier would give the Bulldogs the advantage in a tiebreaker situation.

But to put it bluntly, all three remaining regular season matches are must-wins for the ‘Dogs if they hope to reach the post-season tournament to be played at Searcy High School.
