Greenwood Boys and Girls Golf Beat Alma

The Greenwood boys’ and girls’ golf teams continued their strong start to the season last Thursday, easily defeating Alma at Ben Geren golf course in Fort Smith. The Lady Bulldogs are the defending Class 6A state champions, while the GHS boys placed second in the state last fall.

The Bulldogs dominated the Airedales by a 48-shot margin, 160 to 208. Senior Evan Griffith led the team with an impressive two-under-par round of 35. Greenwood's top returning player overcame a double-bogey on the opening hole, but made up ground over the next eight in the nine-hole competition. His teammates played well also.

Seniors Bradley Brotherton and Cameron Adams both shot a 40, while promising sophomore Hayden Weaver showcased his skills with a 42. Sophomore Brady Fein and junior Landon Tuck were right behind, both carding a 43.

GHS freshman Ethan Clark competed well and finished with a 54, while tenth-grader Avery Cole completed the nine-hole round with a 56. Only the top four individual performances are used to calculate team scoring.

The Greenwood girl’s basically played themselves, since Alma had only one female player. Returning state champions Ella Austin and Jordyn Lane, both juniors, led the way for the Lady Bulldogs. Austin shot a 44 and Lane a 45 over nine holes.

Freshman Halee Jones and senior J.J. Mohteau finished with a 47 and 50, respectively. Sophomores Erin Gilbert (60) and Olivia Walker (62) finished things off for the Lady Bulldogs.

Greenwood returned to the links at their home course at Vache Grasse Country Club this past Tuesday against both Dover and Springdale, but results were not available at press time. They are slated to face Siloam Springs at Ben Geren in Fort Smith on Thursday.
