Several members of the GHS track and field teams acquitted themselves well in both the 5A West conference meet and in the subsequent state meets as their season came to an end last week.
Head track coach Brian Sims and head cross country coach Jim Andrews took their charges to Vilonia on April 26th for the conference meet.
The GHS girls placed fifth overall with 43 points, while the boys finished sixth with 48 points.
Vilonia blew away the competition overall, scoring well over 200 points with both their boys’ and girls’ teams. Russellville placed second in both categories.
GHS Girls
Four Lady Bulldogs earned points for Greenwood, including a trio of first place finishes from Annalee Buso, Taylor Koeth, and Macie Cash.
Buso won the pole vault and earned 10 points for her team, clearing the bar at 9’6”.
Koeth won the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:12.15. She also placed third (5:32.59) in the 1600-meter run.
Cash earned first place points in the 1600-meter event with a time of 5:29.85 and ran fifth (2:34.14) in the 800-meter run.
Jaelin Glass finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 4’10” to earn points.
GHS Boys
For the Bulldogs there was only one first place finish, Nathaniel Gonzales in the 1600-meter run, but the team scored points in eight different events.
Gonzales earned 10 points with a winning time of 4:37.49 over 1600 meters. Younger brother Vincent finished 27 seconds behind in ninth place. Nathaniel also placed fourth (10:40.12) in the 3200-meter run.
Max Vickery scored 16 total points for his team, finishing second in two events. He ran a time of 11.40 seconds in the 100-meter dash and a time of 22.96 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
Greenwood’s Christian Schaefer finished third in the pole vault, soaring over the bar at 12’6”.
Ryan Farr placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.22 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay team also earned fourth-place points with a time of 9:35.60.
5A Championships
This past Saturday several GHS thinclads competed in the 5A state championship meet at Lake Hamilton High School. Two Bulldogs placed and earned points while three Lady Bulldogs also scored points. Four distance runners, a sprinter, and two pole vaulters represented Greenwood.
Sylvan Hills (115 points) won the girls overall competition, finishing nearly 45 points ahead of second place Jonesboro (70.5). Vilonia (121 points) ran away with the boys’ division with Texarkana (53.5) finishing second.
The GHS girls finished 11th out of 26 teams with 20 points, led by Taylor Koeth with a second-place finish in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:57.85. She also ran sixth (5:40.03) in the 1600-meter run.
Koeth’s second place finish also earned her the right to compete in the state’s overall Meet of Champions, also at Lake Hamilton this coming Saturday.
Macie Cash ran fourth (5:33.22) in the 1600-meter run and Annalee Buso placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 9’6”.
The GHS boys scored in two events totaling three points. Christian Schaefer was seventh in the pole vault at 13’ even and Max Vickery placed eighth (22.87) in the 200-meter dash.
After the meet, Coach Andrews said, “It was tough competition in the new 5A classification, but I feel we did great, and [we] look forward to next year.
“I love what I do and the opportunity it gives me to work with many great kids,” he added.
