GHS Soccer teams seeking improvement

Both GHS soccer teams continue to seek improved play as the season heads into the home stretch through the end of this month. The Lady Bulldogs are currently 5-5 overall with four regular season matches remaining. The GHS boys are 3-10, also with four contests left before post-season play begins.

Both Greenwood teams were slated to travel to Russellville on Wednesday, and both squads will host Clarksville at Smith-Robinson Stadium on Friday. Both are league contests in the blended 6A/5A West.

Harrison

Greenwood hosted Class 5A Harrison last Friday in a pair of wet weather matches at Smith-Robinson Stadium. The Lady Bulldogs lost to the Lady Goblins, 4-0, while the Harrison boys earned a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs.

The Harrison girls led just 1-0 at the intermission, but three second half goals put the match out of reach. Likewise, the Harrison boys led 1-0 at the half, but then added a pair of insurance goals over the last 40 minutes.

Siloam Springs

On March 30th Greenwood hosted Siloam Springs, one of the top soccer programs in the state. In the opening contest, the Lady Panthers notched a 6-0 shutout win over the Lady Bulldogs, while the Siloam Springs’ boys also pitched a defensive shutout, 2-0, over the GHS boys.

The Siloam Springs’ girls had a balanced offensive attack, scoring three goals in each half, while the Lady Bulldogs failed to dent the net. The Bulldogs suffered a similar fate in the second match.

Clarksville

The Lady Bulldogs extended their modest winning streak to three matches with a 2-1 victory at Clarksville on March 27th. The GHS girls had previously defeated Poteau (OK) and Huntsville in mid-March prior to spring break.

Sophomore Bella Mora scored both of Greenwood’s goals in the opening half, and the 2-1 score at the break was followed by a scoreless second half for both teams.

After the win, GHS Head Coach Andrew Post stated, “Offensively, we have improved from last year.” Sarah White, seven goals, and Bella Mora, six goals, lead the team in scoring, said Post.

Chenyck and Masheayah Moore are both playing well, offensively and defensively, added the coach, who was also pleased with the play of his entire back line and senior goal keeper Carley Zirbel.

As for the GHS boys, their offensive struggles continued against Clarksville, losing 3-1. The Panthers scored two first-half goals, and both teams scored solo goals in the second half.

Since scoring six goals against Huntsville on March 16th, the Bulldogs’ offense has found the net just once in three matches. First-year Head Coach Lukas Shoemaker and his team have been shutout seven times so far this season, and two of their three wins include 1-0 victories.
