By Richard White With the opening of the 6A state tournament less than a week away, the Bulldogs (14-12, 7-6) and Lady Bulldogs (19-8, 6-7) are getting ready for what they hope will be a deep post-season run on their home floor. By Richard White In a sure sign that spring is drawing near, Greenwood High School is about to (literally) kick off the 2013 soccer season next Tuesday at Van Buren, while Bulldogs’ baseball will get underway with a benefit game on the road at Rogers-Heritage next Monday. By Richard White The weather wasn’t great this past Monday, but it was good enough for the GHS baseball team to hit the diamond for the first time in preparation for the upcoming season. It will still be several weeks before the first official pitch is thrown in the season opener, but head coach Randy Gardner and his staff had about 40 players on the field until well after sunset. Greenwood’s Rick Jones receives national coaching honor
By Richard White It seems that the rest of the nation is finally catching on to what Greenwood Bulldogs’ football fans have known for some time. This past Monday, Greenwood High School head football coach Rick Jones was named the National Federation of State High School Associations’ Football Coach of the Year, in a statement released by the organization. Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, the NFSHSA is a national organization for high school sports, of which the Arkansas Activities Association is a member. The coach will be honored at the annual NFSHSA meeting in June in Denver, Colorado. Click Here For More

Bulldogs acquit themselves well in state tournament
By Richard White In their first season of Class 6A competition, the Greenwood Bulldogs basketball team reached the quarterfinals of the state tournament last week, an event played on their home floor at H. B. Stewart Arena on the campus of Greenwood High School. And though they bowed out of the tournament two games shy of a shot at the state title, they were bounced from the bracket by Little Rock Hall, one of the best teams in the state, featuring 6’-9” future Arkansas Razorback Bobby Portis, who led the Warriors with 17 points and entertained the fans with several dunks. Lady Bulldogs reach semi-finals of 6A state tournament
By Richard White The lights went out at Greenwood’s H.B. Stewart Arena last Saturday night after the last game of the Class 6A state tournament, and even though neither GHS team is moving on to the state finals, both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs acquitted themselves very well in their first season of 6A competition. The GHS girls reached the semi-finals on Saturday before losing to Little Rock Parkview, while the Bulldogs fell to Little Rock Hall in the quarterfinals last Friday. By Richard White Trailing 7-0 after five innings, head coach Randy Gardner and his Greenwood Bulldogs opened their 2013 spring baseball season with a thrilling late-innings rally and an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over the Fort Smith Northside Grizzlies last Thursday afternoon. Cecil remembers Martina Peacock and discusses AAA reclassification
By Richard White Greenwood schools’ Assistant Superintendent and Athletic Director Jerry Cecil recently commented on the passing of Martina Peacock, wife of former GHS head football coach Ronnie Peacock, who died recently after battling cancer for several years. He also spoke briefly about the reclassification of schools by the Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) for 2014-16. “I was very saddened to hear that Martina Peacock had passed away,” said Cecil. “Anyone who saw what our cheerleaders did under her leadership would have to agree that she took the sport to another level at Greenwood High School. She brought energy, excitement, and creativity to athletic events. Not only did she have a passion and expertise in cheerleading, she had the same drive and skills in theatre production. Diamond ‘Dogs earn top seed in state tournament
By Richard White Greenwood’s seniors won their 100th career game with a sweep of Little Rock Hall on Friday, April 26th, behind the pitching of senior Chris Hunt, who fanned 12 Hall hitters and hurled a two-hitter. Greenwood won the game easily, 18-2, then swept the doubleheader with a 24-1 victory in game two. The twinbill sweep over Hall helped propel the Bulldogs to a strong finish in conference play as they captured the top overall seed in the 6A East bracket of the state tournament.
