Bulldogs bully Panthers in conference opener, 42-6

By Richard White

It was revenge time for the Greenwood Bulldogs last Friday night, hosting the Panthers of Siloam Springs in the 5A West Conference opener at Smith-Robinson Stadium. The Panthers were the only league team to defeat Greenwood last season as the Bulldogs made their way to another state championship. So payback was on the minds of those Bulldogs who returned from 2010, and when the final horn sounded their goal was accomplished with a 42-6 victory. The 'Dogs are now 4-0.

The Panthers managed to make a first down on the game's opening possession, but ultimately punted the ball away, reaching the GHS end zone. The Bulldogs took over at their own 20, and needed seven plays to score their first touchdown. On second down, junior Drew Morgan raced around right end and down the sideline to the 47-yard-line for a gain of 25 yards. Three more rushing plays moved the football into Panthers' territory at the 38, before a short pass completion from quarterback Hayden Smith to senior receiver Zack Thornton. Smith then executed a great fake and kept the ball himself, racing around left tackle for the 34-yard touchdown run. Senior kicker Adam McFain added the extra point for a 7-0 GHS lead with 6:17 showing on the first quarter clock.

The defense stiffened on Siloam Springs' next offensive series, forcing another punt and giving the Bulldogs' possession of the ball at the home team's 38-yard-line. Despite losing a yard on first down, Greenwood needed just four snaps to score the game's second TD. Smith completed a second down pass to Drew Morgan covering 14 yards to the Panthers' 49. Justin Sunde ran for 14 more to the 35, before Smith rolled to his left and found a wide-open Drew Morgan for a pass completion. Morgan picked up a key block from teammate Zack Thornton and strolled in for the score. McFain's kick made it 14-0 with 3:13 remaining in the opening quarter.

But the 'Dogs weren't done scoring, adding another touchdown in the first period and two more in the second to lead 35-6 at the intermission. After Siloam Springs failed to make it on a fourth-and-two play, Greenwood took possession of the ball at the visitor's 45-yard-line. Smith passed to Thornton for 12 yards on first down, then kept the ball himself for four yards to the 29 on the next snap. Thornton then made a great leaping two-handed catch at the 10-yard-line. Justin Sunde ran for seven yards to the 3, before Smith faked the handoff and scored on a QB keeper with nine seconds left in the quarter. McFain added the extra point for a 21-0 Greenwood lead.

The Panthers managed to score their only touchdown of the game on their next possession behind the play of senior quarterback Braden Pippen, who is the grand nephew of former Greenwood superintendent of schools Bob Evans, who watched part of the game from the press box. Pippen completed three passes on the drive, including one for 28 yards to receiver Austin Van Poucke. He also rushed three times, including the last one for 16 yards and the touchdown. But the Panthers botched the extra point attempt, keeping the score at 21-6 early in the second quarter.

Greenwood responded in short order, scoring on its next possession, needing just six plays to reach the end zone. From their own 25 after Drew Morgan's kick return, the Bulldogs were stymied on their first two snaps, losing ground back to the 21, and needed 14 yards to move the chains on third down. Coach Rick Jones then called a middle screen to Drew Morgan, who caught the pass from Smith and reached the 37-yard-line for the first down. Three plays later, Smith threw off balance to Morgan again near the Panthers' 45-yard-line, and the senior receiver did the rest with his legs, galloping unhindered to the end zone. Adam McFain booted the extra point and Greenwood led 28-6 at the 5:50 mark of second quarter.

Disdaining the punt, Siloam Springs tried another fourth down play at the 29-yard-line on their next possession, but failed to get the yard they needed. Greenwood took over after the incomplete pass and needed eight plays plus a key Panthers' penalty to score its fifth touchdown. Facing fourth-and-14 at the Siloam Springs' 33-yard-line, Smith's pass to Drew Morgan was incomplete, but a pass interference call against the Panthers kept the drive alive, giving the Bulldogs a first down at the 18-yard-line. Morgan carried for three yards, Sunde for six yards to the 7, and then again for the score. With 2:14 left in the half, McFain added the extra point for the 35-6 halftime margin. The Bulldogs got another chance to score deep in Siloam Springs' territory, but a fumbled snap was recovered by the Panthers to end the threat.

The Bulldogs punted on the opening possession of the second half, giving Siloam Springs the ball at their own 29. The Panthers kept the football for 11 plays, getting some help after a personal foul penalty on Greenwood. The final play of the drive was a long pass attempt that was intercepted by GHS junior defensive back Matt Sisco at the Bulldogs' 8-yard-line.

On first down, Justin Sunde ran to near the 18, and to the 20 for the first down. Hayden Smith then completed a short toss to Sunde, who picked up blockers to finish off the 80-yard catch-and-run for the touchdown. McFain's kick was true for the 42-6 lead with 4:06 left in the third quarter. That concluded all the scoring in the game as Greenwood pulled its starters and played reserves throughout the final period. GHS sophomore Jabe Burgess took the snaps at quarterback due to a minor injury sustained by junior backup Houston Kennedy in a junior varsity game earlier in the week.

Against Greenwood's second tier defense, the Panthers managed one final scoring threat late in the game, penetrating to the GHS 3-yard-line after a long pass completion and run. But Greenwood junior Ryan Vota had a tackle for a loss at the 4 on first down to ignite what became a goal line stand. Two incomplete passes and another rushing play for a loss kept the Panthers out of the end zone.

Following the game, head coach Rick Jones had his usual parley with the local media on the field, and said, "I was really proud of the way we played. We played well in all three phases [of the game]. We had the one fumble right before halftime that put me in a bad mood, but you really have to nit-pick. I think our offensive line got better. Our backs ran hard. [QB] Hayden [Smith] played really well. I thought he really had an excellent football game. We worked really, really hard this week. We had some hard practices, and I think it showed tonight. I just thought we got out and played fast and executed well. We practice playing fast and snapping the ball quick. We try and go as fast as we can, to tire out the other team by the third quarter."

The offense was coming off a lackluster performance against Shiloh Christian a week earlier, but the defense has been stalwart all season for the Bulldogs, and Coach Jones was eager to heap praise on them. "I'm so proud of our guys on defense. The coaches have done a great job. They've made a few personnel adjustments that have worked out really well so far. [But] we have a lot of work to do. We have to make sure that we stay focused and concentrate." Panthers head coach Bryan Ross was equally impressed with Greenwood's defense. "I told the other coaches, at times on film it looked like they had 12 or 13 guys on defense. That's what it looked like tonight," said Ross.

For his part, Coach Jones was also complimentary of Panthers' quarterback Braden Pippen, who finished the game with 232 yards passing and 60 yards rushing. "That QB is a tough kid. He's a really good player. He's a great competitor. That kid fights, and scratches, and claws, and he completed a ton of balls tonight as well. He's a very accurate thrower. But I was really proud of the way our defense played. They just swarmed [to the ball] and played really fast."

Offensively, Jones was pleased with the improvement he saw from a week earlier. "We played really clean football except for that one fumble right before the half," he said. "I was proud of the way the offensive line played. We had a tough week of practice and we tried to get better there, and I think we did." The line protected QB Hayden Smith, allowing him to throw for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for one more. Senior running back Justin Sunde also had a nice game with 132 yards of total offense, rushing and receiving, and three touchdowns.

Asked if he was concerned at all that his first team starters had yet to play four quarters of football this season, Jones said, "I see that as a good thing, especially if you play somebody like Siloam Springs. They're a really good football team. That's one reason why I was so proud of the way our guys played." The coach ended his post-game remarks by addressing this week's opponent, the Morrilton Devil Dogs. "I'm trying to walk off the field without worrying about next week," said Jones. "But I tell you what, everybody I've talked to says we had better watch out, because they can flat-out fly. Morrilton's really good and they have great speed. We're just going to have to play smart football."

Morrilton lost a close game to Alma last Friday, and will not want to fall to 0-2 in the 5A West Conference race. The Bulldogs will be on the road the next two Friday's, at Morrilton and at Huntsville, before playing at home again on October 14th against the Harrison Goblins. October 21st is homecoming against Vilonia, before Greenwood finishes the season on the road at Greenbrier and Alma. Game time this Friday night at Morrilton is 7 p.m.
