Bulldogs stymie Saints, 55-0

By Richard White

In their final non-conference tune-up before embarking on the 2011 5A West league schedule, the Greenwood Bulldogs victimized one of the state's perennial football powers last Friday night at Smith-Robinson Stadium, blanking the Shiloh Christian Saints 55-0. The dominating shutout victory avenged last season's loss at Shiloh and improved Greenwood's season mark to 3-0 before hosting the Siloam Springs Panthers this week in the 5A West opener.

The Bulldogs kicked off to start the game before a packed house cheering for the home team. Derek Morgan's kick sailed through the end zone, as usual, and the Saints' offense started at their own 20-yard-line. But the GHS defense proved worthy of the challenge, forcing a punt on fourth down and giving the Bulldogs the football for the first time at the Shiloh Christian 49, after a poor kick.

Senior quarterback Hayden Smith led the Bulldogs' offense onto the field, and after taking the first snap, handed the ball to senior running back Justin Sunde, who bounced outside and around the right side of the line. Sunde picked up a key block and raced toward the right front corner of the end zone for the game's first score. Senior kicker Adam McFain was true on the extra point, and Greenwood led 7-0 at the 10:23 mark of the opening period. The Bulldogs would go on to lead 42-0 at the half.

With the Greenwood defense holding the Saints to an incredible minus 19 yards on offense in the first quarter, and just one first down through 24 minutes, the Bulldogs scored five more times, three on offense plus two defensive touchdowns. The second touchdown came on a fourth down pass from the 2-yard-line, with Smith connecting with junior receiver Drew Morgan for the score. The play concluded an eight-play drive, the first seven of which were all running plays. McFain's kick made the score 14-0 at the 6:28 mark of the opening stanza.

The next GHS score came at the 1:53 mark of the period when linebacker Brandon Boerjan picked off a Saints' pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. Three minutes later, defensive back Derek Morgan grabbed another Shiloh pass after it was tipped, and returned it 37 yards down the left sideline for another GHS score. McFain added the extra point after each score for a 28-0 lead with 10:39 remaining in the second quarter.

On Greenwood's next offensive possession, which began at the Bulldogs' 43-yard-line, QB Hayden Smith led the home team on an eight-play drive that included a great one-handed catch by junior receiver Cole McAlister for a 16-yard gain. On the final play of the drive, Justin Sunde burst through the middle of the Shiloh defense and weaved his way through potential tacklers for 19 yards and a touchdown. The point after increased Greenwood's lead to 35-0.

The Bulldogs got their last score of the first half with 3:11 left before the intermission. It came at the end of a brief two-play drive that was aided by a personal foul penalty assessed on the Saints. From the 12-yard-line, Sunde found running room around the left side, juked a defender, and found pay dirt in the end zone. McFain's kick gave the Bulldogs a 42-0 lead at the break. The GHS defense also got pass interceptions from senior Sabastian Neece, sophomore Taylor Hasley, and junior Matt Sisco for a total of five interceptions through the first two quarters.

Greenwood took the opening kick of the third quarter, with Derek Morgan returning the ball 43-yards to the Bulldogs' 46-yard-line. A personal foul penalty on the Saints moved the ball to the Shiloh 39, setting up a six-play drive that ended with a 19-yard scoring run by Justin Sunde. The Bulldogs led 48-0 after the extra point kick failed at the 7:19 mark of the third period.

With the mercy rule in force, the second half flew by, and the Saints moved the ball somewhat better against Greenwood's defensive reserves. But Greenwood wasn't finished scoring, even with the second team on the field. Junior QB Houston Kennedy led the next scoring drive, doing much of the damage on his own running the football. The final two plays of the drive were runs by sophomore running back Hoyt Smith, accounting for 15 yards and six points. This time the PAT was good and the Bulldogs led 55-0 very early in the fourth quarter.

The Saints did manage to reach the end zone late in the game, but their touchdown was called back due to a penalty, from which they were unable to recover. Greenwood took over on downs at its own 13-yard-line, and ran out the final minute of play, sealing the victory and gaining a measure of satisfaction for all of the small schools that have been beaten so badly by Shiloh in recent years. The Saints currently play in 4A and are the defending state champions in that classification, and like Greenwood, they will be moving up in class for the 2012 season, possibly joining the 5A West.

After the game, GHS head coach Rick Jones expressed pride and satisfaction with the play of his defense. "Our defense played really well," said the coach. "They played fast and furious, and it was fun to watch. They fly to the football, and when they do that we have a chance against a lot of pretty good football teams. Our defense played awesome. I'm awfully proud of [them], but offensively we were spotty. We didn't execute in crucial situations, and it was really frustrating to get stopped on fourth down about three times. We have to get better there. We weren't as sharp as we need to be offensively. We have some work to do, there's no doubt about it."

"They whipped us defensively," said Saints' head coach Josh Floyd. "That's as much as we've ever been whipped on the offensive side. We turned the ball over several times in the first half," he added. "We knew we had to play really, really well to even have a chance to win. [But] when you turn the ball over that many times, you pretty much shoot yourself in the foot. We have to protect the ball better."

As for the visiting Saints, Coach Jones was magnanimous in his comments. "They're just young, and when you turn the ball over, bad things happen," he said. "They have good players and they'll be back. It's a close series, and sometimes one [team] gets the upper hand and another time the other one, but it's usually a close ballgame." With both teams moving up in classification next season, Jones indicated that the two teams will continue to play. "We're gonna keep it going and we're planning to play them on week three again. It's a good rivalry," said the coach.

The coach also responded to a question about Derek Morgan's ability to consistently put the ball in the end zone on kickoffs. "It's a great weapon in high school football," he said. "When that ball goes into the end zone and you force somebody to go 80 yards, it's a long road to hoe. The difference between starting on the 20 and starting on the 40 is huge. It's unbelievable the difference, statistically, in just that 20 yards. When we can make people go 80, it's a lot of fun."

Jones acknowledged the difficulty faced by the Saints after falling behind so early in the game. "We've all been there," admitted the GHS head coach. "I've been on the other end of that same thing. You get behind early and you try to catch up, but I'd rather go out fighting. We got [them] behind the eight-ball fast, and when you're in that situation you have to let it go and do what you can. Their best shot to get back in the game was throwing the football, and he [Coach Floyd] did it and we got some picks and it [the score] got worse."

Now the Bulldogs turn their attention to the conference opener and their third consecutive home game. The Panthers of Siloam Springs were the only 5A West team to defeat Greenwood last year in conference play, a memory the 2011 Bulldogs undoubtedly hope to erase with a victory Friday night. The 'Dogs will then hit the road for two games at Morrilton and Huntsville before returning home for two contests with Harrison and Vilonia (Homecoming). They close out the season on the road at Greenbrier and Alma, which appear to be their toughest games on the schedule. Game time Friday is 7 p.m.
