Bulldogs improve to 7-0 with win over Goblins
By Richard White The beat goes on for the 2011 Greenwood Bulldogs, as evidenced by their 54-14 shellacking of the Harrison Goblins last Friday night at Greenwood's Smith-Robinson Stadium. They remained unbeaten at 7-0 and improved their 5A West Conference record to 4-0 with three games remaining in the regular season. It was also senior night for the Bulldogs, who have 30 seniors listed on their roster. Greenwood amassed an incredible 37 points in the first 12 minutes of the game, led 47-0 at the break, and added a final touchdown in the second half. The Goblins kicked off to start the game, booting it out-of-bounds, giving Greenwood the ball at the 40. The Bulldogs lost two yards on first down, but quarterback Hayden Smith completed a pair of passes to junior Drew Morgan and senior Zack Thornton for 21 yards to the Harrison 41. But when the drive appeared to stall after a penalty wiped out a big gain, Smith completed a 43-yard scoring toss over the middle to Morgan, who cut back toward the left sideline and found the front corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Senior Adam McFain kicked the extra point, making the score 7-0 at the 9:31 mark of the first quarter. The Goblins lost the football just two plays into their second possession when Greenwood's Sebastian Neece intercepted a long pass and returned it 41 yards to the Goblins' 8-yard-line. A penalty cut that distance in half, setting up the Bulldogs' second score moments later. Facing third down, Drew Morgan took a direct snap from center and ran right toward the pylon for his second TD of the game. McFain's kick made it 14-0. After forcing a Goblins' punt, Greenwood took possession of the ball at its own 19-yard-line, and needed just one big play to reach the Harrison red zone. Hayden Smith reconnected with Drew Morgan over the middle for 64 yards before the junior receiver was dragged down from behind at the Goblins' 17-yard-line. A personal foul penalty on the tackle moved the ball to the 8. Two plays later Smith scored a touchdown, but the play was called back due to a penalty. From the 13, Smith kept the ball again on third down and reached the 3, bringing up fourth down. Coach Rick Jones then sent Adam McFain into the game for a chip shot field goal, making the score 17-0. Moments later, the GHS offense was in business again, following a mid-air fumble recovery by Greenwood senior defensive back Derek Morgan, who was tackled immediately at the Harrison 23-yard-line. Drew Morgan got the call on first down, completing a well-executed reverse play for the touchdown. McFain's kick made it 24-0 with 4:16 still remaining in the opening period. But the Bulldogs were far from finished offensively. Still unable to move the ball against Greenwood's stingy defense, Harrison was forced to punt once again, and senior Justin Sunde returned the kick 31 yards to the Goblins' 24-yard-line. The officials tacked on additional yards to the 13 after a penalty on the play. Hayden Smith passed to Sunde on first down for a dozen yards to the 1, before Sunde carried in for the score on the next snap. But the extra point was wide, keeping the score at 30-0 with 2:07 left in the first period. Another Harrison turnover on yet another pass interception, this one by Blake Hasley, gave Greenwood the ball at its own 46. On first down, Zack Thornton made a great diving catch of a Hayden Smith pass at the Harrison 43. Three plays later, Smith kept the ball for nine yards and the Goblins were flagged for a facemask penalty, moving the football to the 12-yard-line. Smith then rolled out to his right and hit junior Jansen Stein for the touchdown. This time McFain's kick was good, making the score 37-0 on the final play of the first quarter. The Bulldogs finally had to punt on their next possession, while Harrison continued to struggle on offense, unable to move the chains for a first down. Following a poor effort by the Goblins' punter, Greenwood got the football at the Harrison 40-yard-line with just over seven minutes left in the half. With the help of a pass interference call, the Bulldogs got close enough to try another field goal, this one from 30 yards out. McFain's kick was true, increasing the GHS advantage to 40-0. But it quickly became 47-0, after Justin Sunde returned a Harrison punt 43 yards down the right sideline, picking up blockers until he reached the end zone. The PAT made the score 47-0 at the half. Harrison finally succeeded in making a first down, but with the help of a penalty. Halftime stats revealed that the Goblins had run 27 plays for just four yards, and were flagged for 74 yards in penalties. Greenwood scored again on its first possession of the second half, after Harrison reached the Bulldogs' 19-yard-line, but gave the ball up on downs after successive losses that moved the ball back to the 29. With junior QB Houston Kennedy calling the signals, Greenwood marched 71 yards in just six plays. The touchdown came on a short pass to Zack Thornton, who turned it into a spectacular 48-yard catch-and-run, weaving his way through traffic and breaking tackles until he reached the end zone. The extra point made the score 54-0. Against Greenwood's reserves, the Goblins did manage to avoid the shutout, scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns. The first came on a 4-yard run by quarterback Dalton Lovell. The second resulted from a 16-yard pass completion from QB Tate Stokes to Andrew Matthews. But when the final horn sounded, the Bulldogs left the field with a 40-point victory, an unblemished record, and three more conference games remaining to reach their goal of winning a league championship in 2011. In his post-game comments, GHS head coach Rick Jones was very complimentary of his players, both offensively and defensively. Concerning his defense, Jones said, "They are very aggressive. They're not going to hold back, and we're not real patient. We're going to be in attack mode most of the time. We're not real big, but we have some pretty good quickness. They are fun to watch." "Our kids played really well out of the gate. I was proud of them," said Jones. "I thought all along that Harrison was better than a 1-5 team, but we just jumped on them fast, and that was so much fun to watch. Our kids just made play after play. I thought [we] came out and executed well in all three phases [of the game]. The key is playing fast. If you're not going full speed out there it means you're not playing hard." Jones was also complimentary of the home town support for his Bulldogs. "We love our crowd. It's a great atmosphere [in which] to play high school football. We thrive on it." The coach also spoke highly of senior QB Hayden Smith, who completed his first dozen pass attempts in the game. "I don't think that's too bad," said the coach. "I thought he made good decisions, even when we had to scramble and hit the guy in the end zone. That was a really nice play. He's just making good decisions, and I think he's feeling more comfortable in the role. We just have to keep getting better every day. We're going to enjoy this one tonight and we'll worry about Vilonia tomorrow. That's about all you can do." Greenwood players also wore pink socks for the game, and the coaches wore tee shirts with pink ribbons in support of breast cancer research. Asked if he might consider wearing pink in the future if it meant scoring 54 points a game, Jones said jokingly, "If I thought that was what did it, I would be happy to. I'd be in pink from head to toe." On a more serious note, Coach Jones heaped praise on both of his senior kickers, Adam McFain and Derek Morgan. "Adam's been wonderful and Derek's been wonderful. I can't say enough about both of those kids. I think they can both kick at the next level. Obviously, kicking the ball in the end zone and making [teams] go 80 [yards] just mathematically makes it tough to play offensive football." The Bulldogs have just one home game remaining on their regular season schedule. The Vilonia Eagles will come calling at Smith-Robinson Stadium this week for homecoming. The Bulldogs will be an overwhelming favorite to win the game, slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The 'Dogs then close out the regular season on the road at Greenbrier and Alma, and the outcome of those games will decide the conference championship and determine the four post-season seeds from the 5A West. A best guess is that all three of those teams will make the playoffs, with Morrilton as the likely fourth seed. Looking even further ahead, the top seeded team in the 5A West will play its first two post-season games at home before going on the road for the semi-finals.
