Freshman Bulldogs Make It A Shiloh Sweep In 2011
Jr. 'Bulldogs rebound with impressive win over Shiloh Christian
By Richard White After suffering two consecutive heartbreaking losses, the Greenwood Junior High Bulldogs responded with one of their best efforts of the season last Thursday night, defeating the visiting Shiloh Christian Junior High Saints at Smith-Robinson Stadium, 35-18. The win moved Greenwood's season record to 6-3 overall with one game remaining on the schedule, a rematch with Alma this week to close out the season. The two teams met in non-conference action in the season opener, with Alma taking advantage of several Greenwood mistakes to win decisively, 30-13. With a River Valley Conference title beyond their reach, the Jr. 'Dogs hope to close out the 2011 campaign with a win over the rival Jr. Airedales. Against the Saints, Greenwood's defense held on a fourth down try as Shiloh crossed midfield on its first possession following the opening kickoff. Taking over on downs near their own 45, the Jr. 'Dogs called on running back Cameron Palmer for three consecutive carries, moving all the way down to near the Saints' 10-yard-line. Snap number four on the drive resulted in a touchdown pass from quarterback Reid Wheeler to receiver Kevin Jones. Also the team's kicker, Jones added the extra point for the 7-0 lead. After trading punts with the Bulldogs, the Saints started their third offensive possession at their own 30, and needed just four plays to score their first touchdown. After moving to their 39, they got a 61-yard run for the first of their three touchdowns on the night. Their two-point attempt was flagged by the officials for an illegal pass, keeping the score 7-6 early in the second quarter. The Bulldogs responded with their second scoring drive of the evening. After Seth Bland returned the kick for about 10 yards to the Greenwood 36, Palmer ran for 11 yards on first down to the 47. He ran again on the next snap for 10 yards to the Shiloh 43. But those two carries were just warm-ups for his next feat - a 35-yard romp to the 8-yard-line. Catching his breath, Palmer got the call again and the ball, running once to the 2 and then once more for the touchdown. Jones added the extra point for the 14-6 lead. The Jr. 'Dogs got a chance to add to their lead moments later when the Saints fumbled the ball and Greenwood recovered it at the Shiloh 19-yard-line. Palmer ran twice to the 8, then Chris Sunde gave him a break and picked up a yard to the 7. Palmer then ran twice, the second carry for less than a yard and the touchdown. The PAT by Jones was good, and Greenwood led 21-6 midway into the second quarter. But the Saints weren't about to quit, and quickly got back into the game. After a kick return to the 26, they completed a 74-yard touchdown pass, as the receiver managed to get behind the Greenwood secondary. Again, the two-point conversion attempt failed, but the visitors had pulled closer at 21-12, which turned out to be the halftime score. A penalty negated a nice kick return by Greenwood's Tanner Cooper, and a fumble was recovered by the Saints, ending the 'Dogs' next possession. When Shiloh failed to cash in on the turnover, Greenwood threatened once again, moving into Saints' territory before quarterback Reid Wheeler was intercepted with just 18 seconds left in the half. The Bulldogs missed an opportunity to put additional pressure on the Saints to begin the second half, punting on their opening possession. Shiloh then marched 62 yards in just six plays, scoring on an 18-yard TD pass. The two-point play failed when Greenwood's Tanner Chapple intercepted a pass attempt, keeping the score at 21-18 with 3:49 left in the third period. But that was all the scoring for the Saints as the Jr. 'Dogs added two more insurance touchdowns and the defense clamped down on the visitors. Starting from their own 30 after the kickoff, Greenwood used a 15-yard penalty against the Saints to jumpstart their next scoring drive. The flag moved the ball to the Jr. 'Dogs' 44-yard-line, and Cameron Palmer ran for 11 yards to the Shiloh 45, then twice more to the 30. After a 5-yard penalty on the visitors, Palmer ran for 17 yards to the 18. After a loss of a yard on a carry by Kevin Jones, Palmer ran five more times, including the last one for the touchdown from a yard out. Jones added the PAT for a 28-18 lead early in the fourth quarter. Another Shiloh turnover led to Greenwood's final score of the game, after recovering the ball at the Saints' 20-yard-line. Cameron Palmer ran four times for nine, four, two, and five yards for the score. Jones added the extra point, making the score 35-18, assuring Greenwood's sixth win of the season. The Saints picked up a first down on their last possession, but turned the ball over on downs with 2:13 left in the game. Fittingly, Cameron Palmer helped to run out the clock, carrying the ball three more times before Reid Wheeler took a knee to end the game. After two disappointing losses in a row, Greenwood head coach Kenneth Thornton was very pleased with his team's play against Shiloh. "We told the kids the other day, we can go 5-5, 6-4, or 7-3, it's up to them. And I was worried Monday because we didn't practice great, and I didn't understand that. But last week was real emotional for us. We played hard, and laid it out there, and came up short. [But] by Tuesday it was a little bit better, and Wednesday was a phenomenal practice, and then they came ready to play tonight, and they played all four quarters. We mauled them up front. We just ran the ball right down their throats between the tackles. We're pleased. We're happy with the kids' performance." The coach also complimented running back Cameron Palmer. "He's a tough little sucker," said Thornton. "He ain't very heavy, but he's every bit muscle, sinew, and bone." Palmer was injured and did not play in the season opener at Alma, but figures to be a major part of Greenwood's attack this week in the rematch. "I think we've figured out what we can do offensively," said the coach. "I think we've gotten better defensively [too]. We didn't have a three-man front when we played Alma the first time, and we've got a three-man [front] now. We can also move those guys in and make it look like a five-man front. We're a whole lot better, and I'm sure they are better too. So it should be a good ballgame at home. This is my second season and you just develop an appreciation for the Alma-Greenwood rivalry. I can't wait to get started." Thursday's season finale will kick off at 7 p.m. |
