Freshman Bulldogs Dominate Darby
Jr. Bulldogs dominate Darby Rangers
By Richard White The Greenwood Junior High Bulldogs rolled to their third consecutive victory last Thursday night in a dominating performance over the Fort Smith Darby Rangers, winning 37-0. The game was played on the new turf field at Mayo-Thompson Stadium on the campus of Fort Smith Northside High School. After a season-opening loss at Alma, the Jr. 'Dogs have now improved their record to 3-1, including three straight wins to begin the 2011 River Valley Conference schedule. The defense set up Greenwood's first touchdown when Kevin Jones made a nice one-handed pass interception on Darby's first offensive possession to start the game. Jones returned the ball about 20 yards to near the Rangers' 20-yard-line. A few plays later running back Cameron Palmer cashed in on the turnover with a touchdown run from inside the 5-yard-line. Kevin Jones then completed the scoring drive he started by kicking the extra point for a 7-0 Greenwood lead. On their next possession, the Rangers gambled on fourth down deep in their own territory, picking up the two yards they needed for the first down. But three plays later, Greenwood defensive linemen Jackson Cole made a tackle behind the line-of-scrimmage to force Darby to punt, with the kick rolling dead at the Rangers' 37-yard-line with 41 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Palmer ran twice before the period expired, gaining 15 yards to the 22. When play resumed on the other end of the field, the Jr. Bulldogs needed six more plays to reach the end zone. Facing fourth-and-one at the 14, Palmer got the ball from quarterback Reid Wheeler and rambled six yards to the 8, then ran once more to the 3-yard-line. After Chris Sunde got two yards to the 1, Palmer scored the touchdown behind the power blocking of Sunde and huge offensive lineman Nick Houston. The PAT attempt by Jones was wide right, but the Bulldogs still led 13-0 with 6:01 left in the first half. The Bulldogs scored their next TD with just 20 seconds left in the second quarter. Kevin Jones' second pass interception - a leaping catch at the Greenwood goal line - helped to keep the Rangers out of the end zone. The visitors weren't able to score off the turnover, but did move the ball to their own 40 before punting to the Darby 25-yard-line. With time running out, the Rangers got a bad snap on fourth down, covering the ball at their own 17, but Greenwood took control of the football with 48 seconds left. Palmer ran to the 12 on first down, then Wheeler passed to Jackson Cole over the middle for the touchdown. Jones added the extra point for a 20-0 Greenwood advantage. The Jr. 'Dogs even recovered the ensuring kickoff, when the bounding ball ricocheted off the helmet of a Darby player and was covered by Greenwood's Trey Hamilton. But with so little time remaining, the visitors couldn't get much done after two incomplete passes. Darby kicked off to begin the second half, and the Jr. Bulldogs marched 53 yards in eight plays before Jones kicked a 36-yard field goal, making the score 23-0. The Rangers aided the Greenwood scoring drive when they were flagged for illegal participation and penalized 15 yards. But the visiting fans didn't have to wait long to cheer after another Greenwood touchdown. The Rangers were flagged for an illegal forward pass on their next possession, resulting in lost yardage and the loss of a down. After two more incomplete passes, the Rangers inexplicably choose not to punt on fourth down, coming up short when their quarterback was sacked by the Greenwood defense at the 7-yard-line. Cameron Palmer needed just one carry to score the touchdown and Jones added the extra point for a 30-0 Greenwood lead with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter. Greenwood's final score came early in the fourth period following another failed fourth down try by the Rangers at their own 32-yard-line. Palmer got the most yardage on first down with a nice run down the right sideline all the way to the 10. After a penalty moved the ball back to the 15, Chris Sunde ran to the 12, then backup running back Kolton Hughs rambled to the 7-yard-line. Hughes ran again to the 4, and then scored the touchdown on the next snap, a fourth down play. Jones added Greenwood's 37th point, invoking the mercy rule and keeping the clock moving. Darby managed to take four more snaps, including a fourth down punt, but the Jr. 'Dogs allowed the clock to run out before going on offense. "We whipped them up front," said head coach Kenneth Thornton after the game, explaining his team's dominating performance. "[Darby] had athletes all over the field, and we just wanted to control the football; pound on them and keep the ball away from them the best we could, and those guys up front just mashed 'em. Coach [John] Kincade up in the box said, 'Coach, you've got to see this on film. We are just knocking them off the ball.' I was [also] pleased with our tempo and I was pleased with our hustle. It's good to see on film what we've been working so hard to get them to do in practice. But we've got to continue to get better, because we know that we've got Kimmons, and Alma, and Coleman, and Ramsey, and Shiloh coming up. Our goal is to get better as fast and as quick as we can. I was proud of our guys." This Thursday the Jr. Bulldogs will be on the road once again, this time at Ramsey Junior High School in Fort Smith, but the opponent will be the Buffaloes of Trinity Junior High. Starting time for the game is 7 p.m. Greenwood will play its next home game on October 6th against Fort Smith Kimmons and will play four of its last five games at Smith-Robinson Stadium.
