Bulldogs pound Panthers, 49-14

By Richard White

The Greenwood Bulldogs extended their current winning streak to five games last Friday night with a 49-14 victory over the Greenbrier Panthers. The 'Dogs improved their record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in 5A West Conference play with four games remaining on the conference and regular season schedules. Friday's contest also served as the 2009 homecoming game for Greenwood, with festivities held on the field at Smith-Robinson Stadium before the opening kick.

Greenbrier received that kick and began their first possession at their own 20-yard line. The Panthers ran three plays for positive yardage, but fumbled the ball with the Bulldogs recovering at the Greenbrier 39. It then took only three plays for the GHS offense to reach the end zone. Quarterback Tyler Shook found running back Travis Green for a pass completion on first down, then gave the ball to running back Tony Sandifer twice, the last carry of which was for five yards and the touchdown. Austin Hartness added the point after, and Greenwood led 7-0 just over one minute into the game.

But the Panthers responded with an impressive 7-play drive to knot the score, the final play being a 15-yard pass completion by sophomore quarterback Niel Burcham. The up-and-coming signal-caller completed five of six passes for 72 yards during the drive.

With the game tied, Greenwood failed on a fourth down pass at the Greenbrier 31, giving the ball back to the Panthers. But after penetrating to the GHS 11-yard line, the visitors suffered a pair of 5-yard penalties, moving them back to the 21. Defensive lineman Kyle Helms then sacked Burcham at the 35-yard line, setting up third down and 32 and effectively killing the drive.

Moments later, after the only Greenwood punt of the contest, the Panthers' offense was knocking at the door once again, moving from their own 42 to the GHS 10-yard line. But after a penalty and two failed passes, Burcham was sacked by Helms yet again, this time dislodging the ball and making the recovery at the 36-yard line. On the final play of the first quarter, Tyler Shook passed to Stephen Hogan for 16 yards to the Greenbrier 48.

With the game now in the second quarter, Tony Sandifer raced around the right side to the 39, and Travis Green carried to the 35. Sophomore running back Justin Sunde then delighted fans with an explosive run up the middle for 17 yards to the 18-yard line. Sunde ran twice more, reaching the 13 before Shook passed to Spencer Harris at the 2-yard line. Sandifer then lined up at quarterback and ran the ball in for the score. But a poor snap led to a missed PAT and a 13-7 Greenwood lead with 9:54 left in the first half.

The Panthers answered right back, though, needing just six plays to cover 76 yards. The biggest plays included a 28-yard screen pass from Burcham to Hunter Winston and a 36-yard run by Justin Head. Burcham scored the touchdown on a 1-yard run. The extra point put the visitors up 14-13, and the game appeared to be shaping up as a nail biter. But the Bulldogs took care of business over the final 7:39, scoring twice to take a 27-14 lead at the break.

Tony Sandifer returned the kick to the 27 and the 'Dogs earned a first down three plays later on a run by Travis Sandifer to the 38. Stephen Hogan then raced around right end for 15 yards to the Greenbrier 47, and the officials added another 15 yards for a facemask penalty. Justin Sunde ran to the 24, but a pair of procedure penalties moved the ball back to the 34. Green ran to the 23 before Sandifer moved to quarterback and kept the ball to the 20. After another procedure penalty to the 25, Tyler Shook returned at quarterback and ran to the 21. Shook then threw to Blake Hasley at the 6-yard line, setting up his own TD run around left end on the next snap. The PAT put the Bulldogs back on top, 20-14, with 3:23 left in the first half.

On Greenbrier's next offensive snap, Greenwood linebacker William Caster plucked a loose football out of the air after it bounced off the hands of a Panthers' receiver, returning the interception to the visitor's 14-yard line. Travis Green ran three times to the 5, before Sandifer converted on a fourth down play to the 3. Sandifer then lined up at quarterback and scored on the next snap. The kick by Austin Hartness was good for the 27-14 lead at the intermission.

The halftime stats were quite revealing and not exactly what might have been expected. Greenbrier led in total yards at 241 to 219. The Panthers also led in passing yardage, 176 to just 83 yards for the Bulldogs. But Greenwood dominated in rushing yardage at 136 to 65. However, the real difference in the first half was the turnover ratio. Greenbrier lost a pair of fumbles and gave up an interception, while Greenwood protected the football well and had no giveaways.

When play resumed, the Panthers kicked off and Tony Sandifer returned the ball 24 yards to the 36. After a 5-yard penalty moved the ball back to the 31, the 'Dogs raced down the field in three plays for their fifth touchdown. Shook threw to Spencer Harris for a dozen yards to the 43, then Justin Sunde ran for eight yards, crossing the midfield stripe. Sophomore Blake Hasley did the rest by sprinting around the right side, finding a hole, and bursting through the defense for a 49-yard scoring run. Hartness added the PAT and Greenwood led 34-14 at the 10:58 mark.

After forcing a Greenbrier punt, the Bulldogs got excellent field position when Spencer Harris returned the kick 25 yards to the GHS 31, then got an additional 15 yards on a personal foul penalty. Starting from their own 46, the 'Dogs got nine yards on a QB keeper by Shook to the 37. After a series of penalties by both teams, the offense restarted at the Greenbrier 29 with three straight runs by Sunde, reaching the 3-yard line. Tony Sandifer finished off the drive, subbing at quarterback and getting the touchdown. The point after by Hartness made the score 41-14 with 5:32 left in the third quarter.

A pair of fine defensive plays by linebacker Marco Vota put the Panthers in a hole offensively and forced another Greenbrier punt to the Bulldogs' 42. Travis Green ran to the 49 before Sunde went around left end for 17 yards to the 32. A facemask penalty added 15 more to the Greenbrier 17. After a pair of short runs, Tyler Shook faked the handoff, spun away from contact, and found open ground around the left side for the touchdown. Needing a 2-point play to invoke the mercy rule, the Bulldogs converted on a pass from Shook to a leaping Spencer Harris in the front left corner of the end zone.

With Greenwood leading 49-14, the remaining 1:22 of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter ticked off the clock quickly. The Bulldogs threatened to score again late in the game, reaching the Panthers' 10-yard line with a first down and about two minutes remaining. But Coach Rick Jones called off the 'Dogs and reserve quarterback Hayden Smith took a knee on four consecutive snaps to run out the remaining time.

Coach Jones had quite a lot to say in his postgame remarks. "I was proud of our kids," he said. "Greenbrier came out and got after us right from the start. I really respect the job they've been doing. They play really, really hard and they had some little wrinkles for us and threw us off balance a little bit. But I just knew we were ready to play. I thought we'd play a good game tonight. Our guys were mentally ready. They were prepared. They had a good week of practice and I was proud of the way they played."

Regarding the defense and the play of senior linebacker Kyle Helms: "We wanted to put a lot of pressure on that young quarterback. He's a dandy. He's a nice player. He makes good decisions and hits the open guy. He's very accurate. We needed to pressure him and Kyle and some of the other guys were able to get some pressure on him. We blitzed a little more than I expected that we would. But it was really a good effort. I thought our defense played really well. Our kids flew to the football and I thought we tackled better than last week. We played really sound, solid football the second half."

The coach also addressed the success of Greenwood's running game against the Panthers. "We take pride in being able to take what they give [us]. We thought that with five men [in] the box we had a chance to move the ball on the ground. They were mixing it up and we were able to get some good calls in there. Our line is getting better. I was proud of the way those guys played. They're getting better and better, and our wide receivers blocked awesome on the perimeter. And we turned the pup loose on them and Justin [Sunde] had a nice night running the football. That guy's a little bit of a squirmer, and that was a good thing to see. Obviously he had some holes, but the guy also had a little bit of wiggle. He has the ability to make people miss. I was proud of him. We need him to come in and fill in for us. Unfortunately, Dylan [Dixon], who played so great last week, is injured, and we don't know when we're going to get him back."

"Our issue is that Travis [Green] and Marco [Vota] are such good linebackers, that to have fresh legs out there, it just looks like Justin is on fire when he gets out there. That's one of the reasons it hurts us not having Dylan, because we had two guys with fresh legs that we can throw at them, and they both have different abilities. But Justin is getting better every week and that's a big plus for us."

The coach was also asked about the play of junior Tony Sandifer. "Tony's our money back. Some people call it the wildcat, and people have different names for it, but we call it money. He's our money back and he does a good job finding the holes, knowing when to dart and when to dash, and when to stick it up in there, and when to bounce it. That makes us very efficient in the red zone, and that's so crucial to being successful as a good football team."

Jones also responded to a question about Greenbrier's turnovers. "It changed the complexion of the game, there's no doubt about it. [Greenbrier's] got a nice little package going. They execute that stuff really, really well. They did a really nice job. If they don't turn the ball over it would be a different game. They played hard and I was really impressed with them."

Finally, the coach spoke at length concerning strategy. "I think the main thing is we just try to play fast every play. It sounds clich and trite, but we really emphasize that in practice. Every single play we're going to play as fast as we possibly can, and we're going to try and be physical as well. If they put seven in the box and you can't throw, you're in trouble. If they put five in the box and you can't run, you're in trouble. That's the mathematics of the game. If they rush three and drop eight there's not a lot of space out there to throw the football, but you have time and you can spread the zones a little bit more. We were a little bit impatient, and they gave us a little different look right off the bat, and it took us a while to adjust to it. But we moved the football, and however that's done, I'm happy. We were very efficient in our possessions tonight."

Next Friday the Bulldogs travel to Vilonia to take on the Eagles in another 5A West Conference game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Greenwood has only one other regular season home game left on its schedule, the following week against Siloam Springs. The 'Dogs will then travel to Central Arkansas Christian before closing out the regular season on the road at Alma. If the 'Dogs can close out the conference season unbeaten to win the 5A West title, they will earn the right to host all playoff games at Smith Robinson Stadium.
