The three time Defending State Champions wrapped up their Spring Practices with a Blue/White Scrimmage on Friday afternoon.

The coaching staff divided up the team evenly and some players switched teams during the 4 quarter game.

The Blue team took the win 24-23 in a very close game with big plays being made on both teams and both sides of the ball.

"24-23 is about as close as it can be I guess," said head coach Rick Jones after the scrimmage. "We had some guys make some big plays. I think the thing that makes this spring stand out to me is the guys we knew were players really stepped up and made some plays. That's important, but we've got to find some other guys. The big we looked for this spring is for those other guys that are going to fill in and take up the huge load from those guys that went before them, those 17 seniors that started and graduated. We had good effort, these kids aren't afraid to work. We just have a lot of work to do, we're not very smooth, but we went out and went at it for four quarters and ran a lot of plays. I was pleased with the effort, I thought the effort was good."

Coach Jones going into the Spring Practices said he was looking for competitors to replace the 17 starters that graduated, so he put them through a two week workout of game like situations to try and find the guys willing to put it on the line every Friday night.

Did they find some competitors?

"We think we have," said Jones. "I think that's really the key, because we've put them in some really tough situations. Nearly everyday they had to come out and preform in certain situations rather it was goal line, red zone, yellow zone, third and four, third and 8, or whatever situations we've put them in they've had to compete at different levels and different parts of the game. That's what we look for, we look for guys that will scratch and claw like true Bulldogs."

The Bulldogs will be off for the next few weeks with the AAA new dead period from June 16-29. The countdown to kickoff will really get underway for the team on June 30th when they begin FASDOGS.

Jones Looks To Fill Gaps With Young Greenwood Squad

Yes, there will be a quarterback who follows Tyler Wilson in Greenwood next season, just like there was a quarterback who followed Daniel Stegall two years before.

Junior Tyler Shook and sophomore Tony Sandifer are vying for the position that has featured consecutive Division I quarterbacks over the past four seasons, including the past three Class 5A state champions.

Coach Rick Jones, who is 48-8 in four seasons at Greenwood, has put each of his quarterbacks in charge of Blue and White team offenses and is running the team through game-type workouts rather than practice drills.

“We want to see how they compete and respond to adversity,” Jones said. “They’ve both done very well.”

Shook saw junior varsity action last year and mopped up in varsity games while Sandifer quarterbacked the junior high team to an undefeated campaign.

“Tyler is stronger and is a more physical runner,” Jones said. “He’s been in the system. Tony is more shifty and has good instincts running the ball.”

The game-type workouts also have served the remainder of the team well, since the Bulldogs have only five returning starters.

“We’ve got at least 17 new guys that are going to end up starting,” Jones said. “The only way to evaluate players is to put them in game-type situations. We’re doing more contact and more game situations than in the past.”

Greenwood is in the second week of sanctioned spring drills and will go full pads on Wednesday and shorts on Thursday. The Bulldogs will wrap up spring practice with a scrimmage on Friday at Smith-Robinson Stadium, beginning at 4 p.m.

“If we had 17 back instead of 17 lost, we might not do as much,” Jones said. “Players enjoy playing football. They enjoy competing.”

Greenwood will open the season on September 5 at home against Springdale Har-Ber.
