They say, that the most improvement a team makes is from week one to week two of the season. Greenwood will look to make that statement true after a disappointing 35-25 loss to the defending 7A State Champions.

The much hyped season opener between the 7A and 5A state champions lived up to the billing in front of a standing room only crowd at Southside Stadium and the game was not decided until the final 1:10 left in the game.

The Bulldogs struck first in the game going up 13-0 in the first quarter after a 10 yard touchdown reception by Josh Hogan and a 5 yard run by Trey Hopkins.

Southside rallied in the second quarter with three scores of their own to Greenwood 1 yard touchdown run by Trey Hopkins to take a 21-19 lead at the half.

Both teams would make defensive adjustments during the half and both would remain scoreless during the third quarter.

Hopkins would again score from 1 yard out in the "Money" package to put the Bulldogs up 25-21 with 11:13 to go in the game. Southside pulled ahead again with 4:58 to go 28-25. Greenwood was on the move, looking to score in the final minutes to again take the lead, like has happened so many times before, but a called fumble gave Southside the ball and the Rebels sealed the win with final touchdown with 1:10 to go in the game.

Greenwood had four turn overs in the game, two fumbles and two interceptions. Southside had one fumble. Greenwood was flagged for 9 penalties for 75 yards and Southside 5 for 40 yards.

Tyler WIlson finished the game completing 31 of 46 pass attempts for 287 yards. CJ McCraney led the Bulldog receivers with 7 catches for 55 yards. Greenwood finished the game with 358 total yards and Southside with 353 total yards. 226 rushing and 127 passing.

"We take great pride in taking care of the football. We didn't do a very good job of it tonight. We're going to do a better job of that next week, I promise you," said Bulldog head coach Rick Jones.

"They were tough, I give Southside all the credit in the world. They did a great job. They played a lot better football than we did tonight. We didn't execute as well as we could, our kids played hard. We didn't execute, to many turnovers, to many missed tackles. Our kids will battle and fight and they'll get better."

"We knew coming into tonight it wouldn't be perfect, but we didn't know it would be that imperfect. We will go back to the drawing board and evaluate," said Jones.
