Finally, the Greenwood Bulldogs got to look across the line of scrimmage and see another team on Monday night as Greenwood hosted Van Buren in a preseason scrimmage.
The first part of the scrimmage was a controlled scrimmage with each team taken a certain amount of offense plays. The Bulldogs executed rather well during this time, but once the second half of the scrimmage started the wheels seemed to come off the top ranked Bulldogs.
The second half was played just like a regular half of live football with twelve minute quarters, except there was no rushing the kicker.
In the second half the Bulldog offense turned the ball over 3 times, one interception and two fumbles and the Bulldog defense was left on the field for large amounts of the time while Van Buren controlled the ball and the clock.
Head Coach Rick Jones was disappointed in how the team responded and played during the second portion of the scrimmage.
"I liked the first half of it when we were just running plays, then it just seemed like we were unstoppable moving down the field," said Jones following the scrimmage. "Then in the game we turned the ball over."
"That's the thing I've been so proud of in that we don't turn the ball over, we take care of the football and we had three turnovers just bang bang bang tonight and that's just not going to get it done against anybody."
"I think Van Buren is an improved football team. I think the most disappointing of all is that we didn't get a lot of snaps offensively to give our wide receivers a lot of touches."
"They controlled the game offensively. That's the nightmare scenario. We turn the ball over, we can't get the ball back. Nobody punts until we do and we only do that to practice there at the end. It was sort of a weird scrimmage it looked so good early and so poorly lately."
"You can look at a lot of things, you can say well the defense for not stopping them. No, it's the offense. The offenses job is to go out there and move the football and execute the offense. We go out there and drop the ball like three times and threw an interception. That's not going to get it done."
"I told the guys after the game. I said, You can learn these lessons now or you can learn them later, but it's good that they've been learned. So tomorrow we turn our attention to the Shiloh Saints and getting ready for those guys."
