It is said that the biggest improvement a team will make is between week one and week two of the season. The Greenwood coaching staff and players defiantly took that to heart as they put the Arkansas sportsmanship mercy rule with 10:28 to go in the third quarter.
Last year the Pirates defeated the Bulldogs 10-9, with their clock control offense.
This year the Pirates again controlled the clock, but the Bulldogs made the most out of their possessions and the Bulldog defense which gave up 42 points last week were the most improved.
The Bulldog defense allowed no points and only 95-yards of offense out of Poteau.
"Our defense worked so hard," said Bulldog head coach Rick Jones. "Our defensive coaches worked till about 5 AM, Monday morning to try and iron out some of the problems that we had. I was really really pleased with the results."
Greenwood held Poteau on their opening series and forced them to punt, but fumbled the the punt back to Poteau. The defense though again held and gave the ball back to offense.
Daniel Stegall on Greenwood's third offensive play of the night did what he does best, by making defenders miss him and went 74-yards for the touchdown.
Jacob Mills who returned to the team this week let the Pirates and Bulldog fans know he was back by hauling in a 4-yard pass from Stegall with 1:05 to go in the first quarter to put the Bulldogs up 14-0 after Mason Knox's second PAT of the night was good.
Stegall found a wide open Scott Loyd running toward the end zone midway through the second quarter and hit Loyd on a 32-yard touchdown pass.
Mills pulled down his second touchdown pass of the night with 37 ticks before the half on a 11-yard pass from Stegall.
With the defense continuing to stuff the Pirate offense, which only totaled 95-yards for the game. The Bulldog offense would only need one more score to give them the 35 point lead need to start the clock running continuously.
Stegall found Cody Long open for the Bulldogs last score of the evening just into the third quarter on a 23-yard touchdown pass. Knox hit his fifth PAT of the night to give the Bulldogs a 35-0 lead.
Stegall and most of the starters retired to the sideline after that and the Greenwood JV team lead by sophomore Tyler Wilson would finish out the game.
"I was really pleased with how the guys played," said Jones. "They preformed very well."
Greenwood finished with 199-yards rushing and 189-yards passing for the night. The Bulldog defense held Poteau to just 57-yards on the ground and 38-yards in the air.
Greenwood travels to Bentonville on Friday to see their new multi-million dollar stadium and get their final tune-up of the nonconference season before Vilonia comes to town on September 23.
