New Era Of Greenwood Football Begins
Rick Jones Hired As Head Football Coach

1-15-04 By: Brian Vaughn
After a wild month after former football head coach Harv Welch was relieved of his coaching duties for not having the proper state certification, The Greenwood school board voted unanimously to hire Rick Jones as the new head Bulldog.
Jones comes to Greenwood from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and vows to bring the pass attack back to the Bulldog nation, that was made popular in the late nineties under Ronnie Peacock.
The search committee that was made up by: Dr. Kay Johnson, Larry Bridges, Jerry Cecil, Jerry Efurd and Damon Sadler had a tough task filling the head coaching positions as a number of top coaches applied and were interviewed for the job.
As the search began Greenwood did contact former Bulldog head coach that led the football program to state title contenders in the late nineties and the state title in 2000 who is now the current Rogers head coach Ronnie Peacock about a return to Greenwood.
Peacock due to his wife Martina, being diagnosed with breast cancer declined and pulled his name out early, saying that it was not a good time to be considering a move, so it was best to just take his name out early on as to not drag it out.
He did however have high praise for his contact with Dr. Johnson and Jerry Cecil.
Some of the other coaches interviewed were: Chris Hill from Morrilton, Billy Elmore from Glen Rose, Chris Woods from Shiloh Christian, and the legendary Fort Smith Southside head coach Barry Lunney.
Greenwood did offer the job to Lunney, but after thinking about it overnight, he declined to remain at Fort Smith Southside, but did give Greenwood a high recommendation to take a look at Rick Jones.
Not only did the search committee look, but they liked what they saw.
Jones who had been at Broken Arrow for 8 years, the largest school district in Oklahoma said the main reason he left to come to Greenwood was he wanted his children to grow up in a smaller community like Greenwood.
Jones said that his Bulldogs would offensively operate out of a four-wide shotgun base and will incorporate the no huddle.
Jones has been friends with Barry Lunney and Ronnie Peacock for years along with Springdale head coach Gus Malzahn and knows about the winning tradition of the Greenwood football program and hopes to build on that.
