Jones To Waste Little Time
Getting Bulldogs Ready
5-9-04 By: Brian Vaughn
New Greenwood Bulldog head coach Rick Jones isn't going to waste anytime during the next ten days set aside for spring football practice in the state of Arkansas, he's going to have his Bulldogs in full pads and hitting on the first day of it.
The Bulldogs who have been starting
to learn the Jones style of ball since his arrival in February will spend five days over the next ten days in full pads, as Coach Jones evaluates the talent he will have this fall.
One position he will be looking closely at is that of quarterback as either of the Greenwood athletes buying for the starting position would be welcome at any program, senior Micah Fritsche and junior Daniel Stegall.
The Bulldogs look to return to the high octane entertaining passing game of the late nineties that former Coach Ronnie Peacock guided the Bulldogs to a State Championship with in 2000.
Coach Jones looks to make his own mark in Bulldog football with his own offensive philosophy which is to operate out of a four-wide, no huddle, shotgun base.
While the head coach at Broken Arrow, just in the last two seasons Jones' teams threw for over 70 touchdowns and 6,500 yards, set three state passing records in Oklahoma and is presently 27th in the record book in the country for most yards ever thrown in a single high school game with 557 yards.
The Bulldog defense is also getting a new head man, as Brian Early has been hired as the Bulldogs Defensive Coordinator. Early was the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator for Minnesota State University for the past two seasons. Before going to MSU, Early was the defensive coordinator for West Memphis High School in 2001.
The Bulldogs will be on the Greenwood practice field around 3:30 each afternoon alternating from full pads to shorts through the spring practice period.
Greenwood football fans are welcome to attend any of the Bulldog practices.
