The Greenwood Bulldogs took part in two team football camps last week one at Smith-Robinson Stadium on Thursday that involved the Bulldogs and Fort Smith Southside and Lavaca.
Then on Saturday, Greenwood went to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and competed with Tulsa East, Broken Arrow and McAlester, Oklahoma in team camp activities.
Coach Rick Jones likes to see his Bulldogs take part in these types of camps, so that he can evaluate his players and see what they look like at full speed against some other top teams.
The camps consisted of offensive and defensive practice against other teams at full speed, but not full contact.
The offensives worked on both the running and passing game during the camps.
Coach Jones just wanted his Bulldogs to be competitive against the teams in Oklahoma and he was happy with what he saw Saturday.
"I wanted them to compete, cause these are good football teams out here," said Jones. "I was pleased with the way we competed. In some ways we executed pretty well, in other ways we didn't execute worth a flip."
Though Coach Jones isn't ready for the first game this fall and is looking forward to additional practice time, his Bulldogs held their own against a top Arkansas and top Oklahoma teams.
He credited the five days in pads his team had over those in Oklahoma.
"If anyone doesn't understand how much five days in pads help you, that's really what we had over these guys in Oklahoma," Jones Said.
The players have been working hard this spring to learn Coach Jones new system and can't wait to take the field this fall to entertain their Bulldog fans.
The Bulldogs will get the next three weeks off then will return June 21 and start their summer FASDOGS strength and conditioning program, and will open the 2004 season September 3 against Shiloh Christian.
