After a 1-9 season last year junior high head Coach Lynn McElroy is excited about how his 2004 team is looking, and it's all because of the number of players he has out this year.
The 9th grade team has 45 players on the roster right now, but McElroy is hoping to top 50 once school starts.
"In some positions we've probably got 2 or 3 kids that could start," said McElroy. "That's what's good we've got some depth at some good positions. In the past their was some positions we were glad to get one guy there."
This 9th grade class was competitive on the football field in 7th grade and 8th grade and Coach McElroy expects even more out of them this year.
"We've got some kids that like to hit," McElroy said.
"We've got some good skill kids. I think we're going to have a real competitive team this year."
With the hire of new varsity head coach Rick Jones, the junior high programs are adapting to his offensive and defensive schemes.
"It's a brand new offense and defense," said McElroy. "We've been working a lot on offense because it takes a little bit longer to get the offense in. These kids are really picking it up fast."
McElroy believes it might take his Dogs a little while to get going, but once the conference games get here he expects that they'll be rolling right long.
The 9th grade Bulldogs play on Thursday nights this fall and will open the 2004 season at Alma on September 2.
