Lady Bulldogs improve to 2-0 in Classic;
Greenwood boys fall to Ozark Hillbillies

By Richard White

The second round of the H. B. Stewart Classic was held Friday night at the basketball arena on the campus of Greenwood High School. In the first game of the day the Farmington girls easily defeated the Lady Pirates of Poteau (OK) by a score of 67-40. Likewise, the Poteau boys lost by double digits to Farmington, 70-48, in the second contest of the afternoon. The Greenwood girls and the Farmington boys, both 2-0, remain as the only unbeaten teams in the tournament.

Lady Bulldogs

The Greenwood and Ozark girls faced each other for the second time in the last two weeks in the third game Friday night. The Lady Hillbillies won the earlier encounter going away, holding the Lady 'Dogs to just 30 points in a 52-30 victory. But the home court does make a difference, as Greenwood got revenge at H. B. Stewart Arena, winning 48-40. With the win, Greenwood head coach Clay Reeves and his Lady Bulldogs improved their season mark to 5-2.

Ozark led early, 6-2, before GHS senior guard Lynsey Turner hit a 3-pointer and sophomore forward Endsley Evans evened the score with a free throw. With the game tied at eight-all, Ozark connected on a three-point basket just before the buzzer for an 11-8 lead after one period. After the timeout, Evans split two defenders and scored inside, then added a free throw to tie the score at 11-11, erasing the last Ozark lead of the game. Greenwood added three field goals and three free throws to lead 20-16 at the half.

The two teams battled to a near draw in the third quarter, with Greenwood getting a slight edge to build its lead to five points, 28-23, heading into the final period. To start the fourth quarter, Evans scored inside to push the lead to seven points, and junior guard Kristen Simmons grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it 32-23, prompting an Ozark timeout. When play resumed, Evans scored again and added a free throw to complete the three-point play. Jessicah Moudy then scored after a Greenwood steal, making the score 40-25, and essentially putting the nails in Ozark's coffin with 5:30 left to play.

The Lady Hillbillies did not go quietly, however, making a 5-0 run to cut the GHS lead to 40-30. Greenwood fouls also put Ozark in the double bonus at the free throw line for the last three minutes of play, helping the visitors to claw their way back into the game with 1:50 remaining. Leading just 44-40, Simmons drove the baseline and scored for Greenwood, and was also fouled. She hit the free throw to boost the lead to 47-40 and seal the victory as the Lady Hillbillies ran out of gas and out of time. Simmons added yet another free throw to make the final score 48-40.

Endsley Evans led Greenwood in scoring with her best offensive effort of the season, accounting for 22 points. A 5-10 sophomore, Evans is playing her first year at Greenwood after moving to the district from the Kansas City area. Simmons added 10 points in the game, all in the second half, while Jessicah Moudy had six points and Lynsey Turner added five. The GHS girls will play for the tournament title against Farmington on Saturday, with the opening tip set for 7:00 p.m.

Bulldogs - Hillbillies

The Greenwood boys fell to 2-5 on the season after losing 68-59 to the Ozark Hillbillies Friday night, suffering their second straight defeat in the H. B. Stewart Classic. The Bulldogs missed their first five shot attempts in the opening quarter and trailed 5-0 before sophomore guard Ryan Lensing hit a three-pointer. Ozark countered with a long ball of its own, but Greenwood scored seven of the last nine points in the period to tie the game at 10-all at the buzzer. Lensing added another trey and a layup to account for most of the GHS scoring. Senior forward Spencer Harris added the other basket on a nice turnaround jumper.

The Bulldogs enjoyed their only lead of the game when a three-pointer by junior guard Patrick Kelley put them up 13-12 early in the second quarter, as the speed of the game picked up noticeably. But the faster pace apparently suited the Hillbillies better as they constructed a 15-2 scoring run and built a 27-15 lead before GHS head coach Brian Martin called a timeout at the 2:14 mark. After regrouping, the Bulldogs managed to score the last six points of the period on field goals by Kelley and Harris and a pair of free throws. The teams headed to their respective locker rooms at the half with Ozark up 27-21.

The Hillbillies committed a turnover on their first possession of the third quarter, and Greenwood senior forward Kyle Helms scored to trim the deficit to 27-23. But that was as close as the Bulldogs would get, as Ozark increased its lead to 45-29 with just over two minutes left in the period. Ryan Lensing and junior forward Billyjack Freeman hit a pair of three-balls for the Bulldogs, but it was too little too late. Leading 48-38 after three quarters, the Hillbillies built a 19-point lead at 62-43 before Patrick Kelley hit a trey to trim the Ozark lead to 16 points. GHS junior guard Tony Sandifer and senior guard Brandon Brewer each scored late to trim the final deficit to single digits at 68-59.

Kelley led all scorers for Greenwood with 12 points. Lensing added 11 as the only other Bulldogs' player in double digits. Sandifer added nine points, junior forward Chris Caudle added eight points, and Brewer chipped in with seven points. Caudle came off the bench in the second half for the Bulldogs and did a nice job, scoring four baskets in the paint. The Bulldogs will close out the H. B. Stewart Classic on Saturday night against the Farmington boys. Game time is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
