Several Greenwood High School track and field athletes competed in the 6A state track meet at Lake Hamilton earlier this month. The event was held on May 4th featuring the top track and field performers from schools across Arkansas in the state’s second largest classification.

Lady Bulldogs
The GHS girls participated in three events and scored a total of 17 points in two of those events, including a second and third place finish. The Lady Wolves of Lake Hamilton won the girls’ competition going away with 109½ points, well ahead of second place Russellville with 74 and third place Benton with 58 points.

For the Lady Bulldogs, freshman distance runner Taylor Koeth turned in the team’s best performance, finishing second in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:18.76, about five seconds off the first place time. Koeth garnered eight points for her efforts.

GHS senior Bailee McCorkle placed third in the pole vault competition, earning six points, while teammate Annalee Buso earned three points with a sixth place finish. McCorkle topped the bar at 11’4” and Buso at 9’6”.

The Lady Bulldogs also ran in the 4x800-meter relay, but did not score points in the crowded 13-team field. Amber Crook, Zoe Davis, Lea Ann Sappington, and Mackenzie Wheeler combined for a time of 11:29.25, good enough for ninth place overall.

The GHS boys scored 18 points at Lake Hamilton, placing in four events, including a pair of second place finishes. Distance runners Joseph Wittig and Zack Looper both finished second in their respective events.

Wittig had a time of 4:31.34 in the 1600-meter run, while Looper completed the 3200-meter run in 10:12.38. Both runners earned eight points for their team.

The GHS boys scored their other two points in the 4x100-meter relay with a seventh place time of 46.38 seconds. The Bulldogs participated in the 4x800-meter relay as well, but their 11th place time of 9:26.01 did not qualify for points. Sprinter Max Vickery also ran in the 200-meter preliminaries but did not compete in the finals.

Meet of Champs
Greenwood’s Bailee McCorkle, Taylor Koeth, and Joseph Wittig all participated in the annual Meet of Champs at Russellville High School on Saturday, May 13th.

McCorkle finished in a fifth place tie in the girls pole vault, clearing the bar at 11’6”. Koeth ran fifth in the girls 3200-meter run with a time of 12:15.33. Wittig placed sixth in the boys 1600-meter run with a time of 4:28.26.
