By Richard White

The Greenwood High School girls and boys soccer teams both reached the 6A state tournament in Siloam Springs last week, earning their way with must-have victories in the loser’s bracket of the 6A West conference tournament.

With both teams facing elimination from further post-season play, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Lake Hamilton on May 5th by a score of 2-1, earning a spot in the state tournament. Senior Courtney Meyers scored both GHS goals.

The next day, in their final 6A West conference tournament game, the GHS girls lost to Texarkana 2-0, earning a sixth seed in the state playoffs.

Also facing possible elimination from post-season play, the GHS boys defeated both Lake Hamilton and Sheridan (2-0) the first week of May to sneak into the state playoffs as a five-seed.

In the state tournament at Siloam Springs, the Bulldogs lost their opening round match to Searcy, 3-0, and were eliminated from the playoffs, completing their 2017 season.

The Lady Bulldogs pulled off an upset in their opening round match on May 11th, topping third seeded Jonesboro, 5-1. Courtney Meyers scored four of the five goals for the GHS girls. They lost their second-round match to Russellville, 5-0, last Friday to end their season.
