GHS soccer teams bow out in state tournament

The Greenwood High School girls and boys soccer teams both reached the 6A state tournament in Siloam Springs last week, earning their way with must-have victories in the loser’s bracket of the 6A West conference tournament.
With both teams facing elimination from further post-season play, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Lake Hamilton on May 5th by a score of 2-1, earning a spot in the state tournament. Senior Courtney Meyers scored both GHS goals.
The next day, in their final 6A West conference tournament game, the GHS girls lost to Texarkana 2-0, earning a sixth seed in the state playoffs.
Also facing possible elimination from post-season play, the GHS boys defeated both Lake Hamilton and Sheridan (2-0) the first week of May to sneak into the state playoffs as a five-seed.
In the state tournament at Siloam Springs, the Bulldogs lost their opening round match to Searcy, 3-0, and were eliminated from the playoffs, completing their 2017 season.
The Lady Bulldogs pulled off an upset in their opening round match on May 11th, topping third seeded Jonesboro, 5-1. Courtney Meyers scored four of the five goals for the GHS girls. They lost their second-round match to Russellville, 5-0, last Friday to end their season.
