By Richard White

The Greenwood High School girls and boys track and field teams participated last Thursday in the prestigious McDonald Relays, held annually at Fort Smith’s Southside High School. More than two dozen teams took part in the event, including numerous Class 7A schools and some teams from Oklahoma.

The Lady Bulldogs finished 15th out of 26 teams, tied with Haas Hall of Bentonville with 10 points each. The GHS boys finished 14th out of 24 teams, tied with Alma and Rogers Heritage, each with 16 points.

Springdale Har-Ber won the boys’ competition with 108 points, well ahead of second place Fayetteville with 66 points and third place Russellville at 35 points. On the girls’ side, Conway (122) took first place, 40 points ahead of second place Har-Ber (82). Rogers High School finished third (74).

The Lady Bulldogs got all 10 of their points from senior Bailee McCorkle, who won the pole vault event, topping the bar at 12 feet even. McCorkle recently signed a letter of intent with the Lady Razorbacks. The University of Arkansas is known for having one of the nation’s best collegiate track programs.

The Bulldogs got all their points in the distance events. Junior Joseph Wittig placed fourth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:30.31. Wittig also placed eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:05.00.

Teammate Zack Looper finished seventh in the 1600-meter event with a time of 4:40.47. Looper also had the day’s best finish for the Bulldogs, earning second place points in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:16.71.

The regular season now completed, the GHS thinclads and Smith-Robinson Stadium will host the 6A West conference meet this Friday starting at 10 a.m. Participating teams include Greenwood, Siloam Springs, Russellville, El Dorado, Benton, Sheridan, Lake Hamilton, and Texarkana.

Qualifiers will then move on to the 6A state meet at Lake Hamilton on May 4th, with the overall Meet of Champs at Russellville High School on May 13th.

The head coach for the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs is Brian Sims.
