Busy Bulldogs to host conference track meet

Over the last two weeks the schedule for the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs track and field teams has been hectic, including three meets at Mansfield, Alma, and Russellville. But since last Friday both squads have enjoyed some time off to rest and practice for the upcoming McDonald Relays at Fort Smith Southside on Thursday, April 20th.
A week later Greenwood will get a chance to showcase its new track surface by hosting the conference meet at Smith-Robinson Stadium on the 27th starting at 10 a.m. Other participating league teams include Benton, El Dorado, Lake Hamilton, Russellville, Sheridan, Siloam Springs, and Texarkana.
Qualifiers from the conference meet will move on to the 6A state meet hosted by Lake Hamilton on Thursday, May 4th. The annual Meet of Champs will be held at Russellville High School on Saturday, May 13th, featuring the state's best track and field athletes from all classifications.
Mansfield Tiger Relays
The Lady Bulldogs finished fourth with 64 points among 16 teams at Mansfield on March 28th. Waldron, Paris, and Mansfield held down the top three spots, respectively. Greenwood was the largest school by classification to attend the meet.
The Lady Bulldogs' top performance was turned in by freshman distance runner Taylor Koeth, who won the 1600 meter run with a first place time of 6:13.31. She also blew away the competition in the 3200 meter event. Her winning time of 13:05.39 was 32 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Greenwood's Aubrey Barnes ran seventh in the 1600 meter run for two points, while Lea Ann Sappington was seventh in the 3200 meter event, also earning two team points. Lilliah Pugh earned four points by placing fifth in the high jump (4'8").
In the 800 meter run a pair of GHS girls earned a total of nine points. Zoe Davis ran fourth (2:51.64) and Mackenzie Wheeler placed fifth (2:53.57).
Callie Scherrey placed third in the 400 meter run. Her time of 1:06.58 was good for six points. She also earned five points by finishing fourth in the 200 meter dash (28.55).
The Lady Bulldogs also performed well in the relay events. The female quartet of Aubrey Barnes, Amber Crook, Zoe Davis, and Mackenzie Wheeler placed second in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 12:00.31, earning eight points.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Abby Cagle, Amber Crook, Callie Scherrey, and Riley Shaw ran third with a time of 4:52.37, garnering six points.
The GHS boys excelled at the Tiger Relays, finishing second with 113 points just behind first place Waldron (128½) and well ahead of third place Booneville (73). The Bulldogs had six first place finishes and four second place finishes.
In the long jump, junior Kenny Wood earned eight second place points with a leap of 19'7". Aaron Testerman placed seventh in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5'6", but he shined in the 400 meter dash, finishing first with a time of 53.20 seconds for 10 points. Collin Curry ran seventh in the 400 meter dash (57.80).
Max Vickery earned five points in the 100 meter dash, finishing fourth (11.75). Vickery also placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.87 seconds, earning eight points.
Greenwood distance runner Joseph Wittig led the pack in the 1600 meter run (4:46.48) with teammate Zack Looper placing second (4:49.19). In the 3200 meter event Nathaniel Gonzales ran third (11:09.32), while James Yeager placed fourth (11:25.63).
In the boys 800 meter run Ronan Stewart placed first with a winning time of 2:10.94, earning 10 points. Nathaniel Gonzales finished second (2:11.93) for eight points.
In the 4x100 meter relay the Bulldogs finished first with the team of Aaron Ohl, Max Vickery, Kenny Wood, and Trey Woods crossing the finish line in 46.58 seconds.
The foursome of Collin Curry, James Dawson, Aaron Testerman, and Max Vickey also ran first in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:52.62. The 4x800 team of Nathaniel Gonzales, Ronan Stewart, Zack Looper, and Joseph Wittig earned first place points with a winning time of 8:32.96.
Both GHS squads ended the month of March in competition at Alma High School on Friday the 31st. The Lady Bulldogs placed 11th (22 points) out of 18 teams, while the Bulldogs finished seventh among 15 teams with 38 points. Class 7A Fayetteville easily won both the girls and boys competition.
Lilliah Pugh placed fifth in the girls high jump clearing the bar at 4'10" for Greenwood's only points in the field events. In the girls 4x800 meter relay Amber Crook, Zoe Davis, Aubrey Barnes, and Mackenzie Wheeler placed fifth with a time of 11:42.10.
In the girls 1600 meter run, Taylor Koeth finished sixth with a time of 5:56.25. Koeth also placed fifth in the 3200 meter run at 12.41.77. Greenwood's Callie Scherrey placed third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:06.39.
For the Bulldogs, Aaron Testerman cleared the bar at 6'0" to place third in the high jump. Testerman also earned second place points in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.29 seconds.
Zane Harmon finished seventh in the triple jump (38' 10½") and Greenwood's Noah Sexton placed eighth in the shot put with a distance of 40' 5¼".
In the 4x800 meter relay the GHS squad of Ryan Farr, Parker Pitts, Brandon Riesberg, and Luke Travis placed fifth with a time of 9:28.23. In the 4x100 meter relay the team of Aaron Ohl, Max Vickery, Kenny Wood, and Trey Woods ran eighth, crossing the finish line in 45.88 seconds.
In the individual long distance races the Bulldogs earned points in two events. In the 1600 meter run Joseph Wittig (4:32.59) and Zack Looper (4:39.27) placed third and fourth, respectively.
In the 3200 meter run Nathaniel Gonzales finished fifth with a time of 10:41.07, while teammate James Yeager came in eighth with a time of 11:11.96.
Last Friday both GHS squads competed at Russellville High School against several Class 6A and 7A schools. The Lady Bulldogs finished 16th while the Bulldogs placed 10th.
The only points (3) for the GHS girls came in the 3200 meter run with Taylor Koeth taking sixth place with a time of 12:30.05.
For the GHS boys, Aaron Testerman earned two points in the high jump with a seventh place finish at six feet even. Joseph Wittig won the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:26.50 for 10 points.
Also in the 1600 meter event, Greenwood's Zack Looper finished fifth (4:35.56). In the 3200 meter run, Nathaniel Gonzales ran eighth for one point with a time of 10:40.22.
The GHS 4x400 meter relay team of Collin Curry, James Dawson, Aaron Ohl, and Aaron Testerman also earned a point with an eighth place finish (3:50.12).
