Greenwood Powers Up, Tops Vilonia

GREENWOOD — The Greenwood Bulldogs matched their entire home run total from last season in just the second game of their doubleheader against Vilonia on Tuesday afternoon.

Two-run homers by Travis Green and Tyler Wilson powered Greenwood to a 15-5 run-rule win in the nightcap and a sweep in its 5A-West opener.

Green's homer started the Bulldogs on their way to the sweep in the first inning to cap a four-run inning.

Vilonia (6-5, 1-3) greatly aided Greenwood (11-3, 2-0) with three errors leading to four unearned runs in the inning. Four more errors in the second inning led to the Bulldogs scoring eight more times to take a 12-2 lead.

“You put together that many freebies and (14) hits, and you can score some runs,” Greenwood head coach Randy Gardner said. “They helped us a lot.”

In the second inning, Greenwood sent 14 batters to the plate with 12 straight reaching base off three Vilonia hurlers. Zach Stegall doubled home a run in the inning, and Wilson followed with his two-run homer. Greenwood rapped out seven hits in the inning and all nine batters scored a run.

“These were our best plate appearances we've had,” Gardner said. “We put some runs on the board.”

In all Vilonia committed eight errors, including another one in the fifth inning with two outs that prolonged Greenwood's inning. The Bulldogs ended up scoring three times in the inning to invoke the run-rule, capped by Kyle Pippin's RBI-double and Brandon Brewer's RBI-single that ended the game.

“This was very uncharacteristic,” Vilonia head coach Glenn McKay said. “Other than this game and one game against Siloam Springs, we've only committed three errors all season. Things snowballed, and it's not like they need help.”

Greenwood pounded out 14 hits led by Wilson, who had four hits.

MacKenzie Been picked up the victory, despite walking six. Greenwood also committed a pair of errors behind him.

“Our defense wasn't great either,” Gardner said. “We hit enough to cover up our problems.”

GAME 2 — Tyler Wilson remained unbeaten, cruising through the first six innings before pitching out of trouble in the seventh inning in the conference opener.

“Vilonia was jacked up,” Gardner said. “They were very aggressive. I don't know if Tyler's been hit like that.”

Greenwood's bats did plenty of damage, stroking 17 hits with Zach Stegall leading the way with three singles in four trips and scoring a pair of runs. Travis Sandifer, Hunter Staton, Kyle Pippin and Travis Green all had two hits.

Wilson yielded a home run to Alex Crawford in the second inning as Vilonia took a 1-0 lead before Greenwood tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Ryan Long's fielder's choice ground ball that scored Pippin.

Greenwood added two runs in the third inning, single runs in the fourth and fifth frames and two more runs in the last inning on Pippin's single that scored two runs. Vilonia scored four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh.

“The kids felt really good against him,” McKay said. “We're not explosive offensively, but we the ball in play OK”

Wilson struck out 13 in the complete-game victory.
