Battle Of The Heavy Weights
Diamond Dogs Fall To Sylvin Hills 6-2
5-6-04 By: Brian Vaughn
It was like a heavy weight fight bwtween the top two prize fighters as top ranked Sylvan Hills and Greenwood battled for a chance to compete for a state championship.
With such evenly matched teams it would come down to who got the breaks of the game to determine the winner.
Today was Sylvan Hills day as with the luck of a fair ball call down the third base line in the bottom of the 4th-inning with two out the Bears busted the game open scoring 4 runs to take a 5-0 lead.
The Bulldogs had their chances all day leaving 9 stranded on bases.
Greenwood would get on the scoreboard in the top of the 5th scoring 2 with the help of back to back doubles by Jantzen Black and Casey Benincosa.
Not enough breaks would swing the Bulldogs way though in the 6-2 loss that ended the Bulldogs season.
"They just did what they had too," said a disappointed Craig Jones. "They took advantage of their hits. It think we out hit them. I thought we swung the bats a lot better than they did they just came up and did it when they needed too."
Daniel Stegall pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing 5 hits with 7 strikeouts.
Jantzen Black was 3 for 4 and Justin Fuchs 2 for 3.
The Bulldogs end the season with a regular season record of 26-7 a school record for wins in a season.
