To only give up only two runs in 15-innings in two games, using only two pitchers in high school baseball is usually an outstanding outing for a team, but when you come home with only one win out of the two games, there's no one on the bus satisfied, especially the coach.
"We can't hit the ball, that was plain and simple," said Bulldog head coach Craig Jones. "We get two hits off a guy we should get base hits off of. We don't have anybody to come up and make an adjustment. We've seen it for eight innings."
The Greenbrier Panthers (4-4, 2-4) got the only score of the ball game in the bottom of the 8th-inning to give them the win over the Bulldogs 1-0 in the second game of a double-header at Panther Field.
The Greenwood Bulldogs (10-4, 3-1) and Panthers fought to a 0-0 tie at the end of 7-innings to send the game into extra-innings.
The Diamond Dogs started the bottom of the 8th out with two quick outs against the Panthers, but on their home field the Panthers weren't going down tonight. A base hit and a walk put runners on first and second and a base hit just off the tip of the glove of a diving Daniel Stegall between first and second would send the game winning runner towards home plate. The Bulldogs tried for the out at home, but the throw to home wasn't in time as Greenbrier takes the win.
The Diamond Dogs were unable to get a runner on base in the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th-innings and only had two hits for the game.
Greenwood senior Cory Allison putting in what could be considered a high school career pitching performance with 11 strikeouts and only allowing 4 hits pitched all 8-innings for the Bulldogs.
Coach Jones, who was forced to coach alone without either of his assistants due to parent-teacher conferences, was very disappointed with the play of his Bulldogs.
"We just wasted a great pitching performance," said Jones. "Allison went out and pitched his heart out. Great pitching performance and we didn't help him one bit."
Joseph Piroutek was 1 for 2 and Justin Fuchs 1 for 2 in the game for the Bulldogs.
In the first game Greenwood took Greenbrier out 3-1 in 7-innings of play.
Senior Mark Leon pitching all 7-innings had 4 strikeouts and gave up 4 hits, while the Bulldogs compiled 7 hits in the contest.
Cory Allison was 2 for 4 and Casey Benincosa 1 for 2.
The Diamond Dogs travel to Pryor, Oklahoma for tournament action Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
