Diamond Dogs Sweep Huntsville
Game 1 8-1, Game 2 12-2
3-12-04 By: Brian Vaughn
Greenwood (6-2, 2-0) started the conference season off the way they wanted too, by sweeping Huntsville.
Greenwood senior Mark Leon went all 7-innings on the mound for the Bulldogs pitching a spectacular game.
Leon struck out 12 Huntsville (0-2) batters only giving up 2 hits and 1 walk in the first game of a double-header Friday evening.
Greenwood gave up their lone score of the first game in the 1st-inning, but would score 4 of their own in the bottom of the inning.
The Bulldogs would add 2 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd-inning after Mark Leon made short order of the Eagles in the top of the 3rd as the Eagles went 3 up 3 down.
The Dogs slipped into cruise control with an 8-1 lead in the 5th and 6th-innings to the displeasure of head coach Craig Jones.
"Jumped up 8-1, I thought maybe we'll stick some more runs on the board," said Coach Jones.
Greenwood only had 4 hits in the game, but Huntsville had a number of miscues that Greenwood took advantage of during the contest.
Casey Benincosa went 1 for 2. Jason McDonald 1 for 2 with an RBI and Ed Woods 1 for 3.
The Bulldogs decided to make short order in the nightcap run ruling the Eagles in 5-innings 12-2.
Casey Benincosa worked all 5-innings with 5 strikeouts and 5 hits.
The Bulldogs would give the Eagles 1 run each in the top of the 1st and 2nd-innings, but they would all but put the game away in the bottom of the 2nd-inning scoring 6 runs for themselves.
As Ed Woods, Micah Fritsche and Jantzen Black each got doubles in the inning.
Greenwood added the additional runs needed in the bottom of the 5th-inning to earn the run rule win.
"The second game we proved we could come out and put some runs on them and stay on them, said Coach Jones. "I was happy with that."
Jantzen Black went 2 for 4 with 4 ruling's. Ed Woods 1 for 1 with 2 RBI's and 3 runs scored. Micah Fritsche 1 for 2 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs travel to Mt. Home for tournament action this weekend and will return to conference action Saturday, March 27th at 1:00 at Greenbrier.
