Greenwood Takes Two Of Three In Tourney
3-11-04 By: Brian Vaughn
The Diamond Dogs played three games in four days in the Bentonville Tournament last week in their final tune-up before conference play begins.
On Monday evening the Bulldogs made short order of Berryville in 5-innings of errorless play 12-0.
Mark Leon took the win for the Bulldogs going all 5-innings with 7 strikeouts and only giving up 2 hits.
Jason McDonald was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Daniel Stegall 1 for 3 with 3 RBI's ,Justin Fuchs was 2 or 2, Casey Benincosa was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's, Will Hash was 1 for 1 and Joseph Piroutek 1 for 1 with 1 RBI.
With the win Greenwood advanced to play Rogers on Tuesday evening.
In what was a tight defensive ball game the Bulldogs would find the one run need to pull off a win 5-4.
Justin Fuchs started the game and pitched the first 5-innings before being relieved by Janzen Black with the game tied at 4-4.
Jantzen Black went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's, Casey Benincosa 1 for 4 with 2 RBI's, Daniel Stegall 1 for 1 and Justin Fuchs 1 for 3.
Greenwood had 7 hits for the night while Rogers had 5.
The win over Rogers put Greenwood in the tournament championship game Thursday night against host team Bentonville.
However, this left Greenwood head coach Craig Jones with quite a dilemma. What to do about pitching in this game considering the Bulldogs open up conference play the next day against Huntsville in double-header action.
Greenwood did the best they could while saving the best to start the most important conference season falling in this one 11-1 in 5-innings of play.
Daniel Stegal got the starting nod on the mound and went 3 1/2 innings before being relieved by Micah Fritsche.
Greenwood only had 4 hits for the game, while Bentonville had 11.
It was a good tournament for the Bulldogs with 5 guys that hit over 300 for the tournament.
Casey Benincosa hit 556 with 5 RBI's, Daniel Stegall hit 400 with 3 RBI's, Jason McDonald hit 333 with 1 RBI, Jantzen Black hit 571 with 2 RBI's and Justin Fuchs hit 429 for the tournament.
